Skype updates for iPad: no Push Notification, no 3G, not even formatted for iPad

Site default logo image

Skype updated their iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad app today to 1.3.1 with the below improvements.

Tested with iPad, iPhone OS 3.2  Improved stability in the following areas: – When switching between tabs – During an incoming call with chat in landscape mode – When in landscape mode – During an incoming call when there is a camera/address book view visible – Handling unread chats – Corrected an alert about ‘unsupported platform’

“Tested with iPad” doesn’t mean it is actually formatted for iPad.  It still is iPhone-sized.  But that’s not the worst of it.

There is no reason besides some back door dealings with Verizon that they shouldn’t have 3G or Push Notifications working on the iPhone by now.  Need proof that they had quit developing for iPhone before the iPad was released?  Have a look at their blog:

We don’t yet know how our app will behave on the iPad. Some journalists who had early access have reported that the existing Skype for iPhone app works just fine on the iPad hardware. This is great news, but certainly doesn’t give us enough confidence to be able to announce and release an app today as we want to give you the best Skype experience possible.

Yep, no work on the iPad Simulator that comes with the starndard development kit.

Russ Shaw, General Manager of Skype’s mobile business in December 2009:

Many of you have also been asking when we’ll release a version which allows you to make calls over 3G – the holy grail of Skype on the mobile, if you like. We’ve had a 3G-capable version ready for some time now, but Apple’s current restrictions mean that they won’t allow us to make it available on the App Store for the moment.

Here’s Skype saying that their 3G version is coming “real soon now” over two months ago.

So tell us again why there is no 3G or Push on Skype?

Fring does offer Skype over 3G.

Taiwanese Website says new MacBook Pros/Airs starting production this month

Site default logo image

Next Media’s Chinese Language Taiwan Apple Daily today reports that New MacBook Pros are going into production this month.  The report says delays were due to short supplies of Intel’s Core iX series of laptop processors.  The new MacBooks had originally been scheduled to be released in March.

The report also says that updated MacBook Airs will receive the Intel Core i3 series chips.

They list Quanta, Hon Hai, Hong-jun, Nikko, Chao Li as manufacturers.

Finally, the report states that new MacBook Pros will top out at 640GB Hard drives or 248GB SSDs and that battery life had been increased to eight hours.

Apple holds its annual WWDC conference in June, which would make a great place for an introduction.

Update: There is some ambiguity as to whether the MacBook Pro will actually ship in April.  Even our Chinese readers are having a difficult time understanding the verbiage.  As near as we can tell the release will start in April but orders may not catch up to demand until June?

Word to word translation:

Thanks tipstar!

You can’t argue with these numbers:

iPad apps have access to 256MB of RAM, single core processor

Site default logo image

First things first: The iPad is fast.  Web browsing is fast, games are fast, app switching is also fast, especially compared to the iPhone.

But if you think there are some crazy specs under the hood, you might be in for an unpleasant surprise.  Doing a little coding, we’ve discovered that iPad apps only have access to 256MB of RAM and the processor thinks it is a single core (probably ARM Cortex A8) processor.

You can verify these results by building an app with the following code in Xcode:

int getRamSize()
{
int     count ;
size_t  size=sizeof(count) ;

if (sysctlbyname(“hw.memsize”,&count,&size,NULL,0)) return 1;

return count;
}

The relatively small CPU requirements (first speculated by Ars’ Stokes) might also explain the iPad’s incredible battery life.  So how does Apple get applications to run so fast?  Thanks Thomas!

Updated: Clarification of physical RAM vs. accessible RAM.  Craig Hockenberry found similar RAM results.  (below)

When using sysctl() to query the amount of memory available to the iPhone OS, the following values are reported:

Kind Bytes Megabytes
Physical (HW_PHYSMEM) 258,998,272 247 MB
User (HW_USERMEM) 210,284,544 200.5 MB

Again, it

iPad has same Broadcom BCM4329 FM Tx/Rx radio capabilities as iPhone, iPod touch

Site default logo image

We’ve heard previously that Apple is set on introducing a FM Radio.app at some point in the near future.  From iFixit’s teardown, we see that the iPad uses the same Broadcom BCM4329 chip as the iPhone 3GS and newest iPod touches. That means that the iPad will also be able to play FM radio as well as broadcast FM signals (to your car stereo?) as soon as Apple enables it in its software (probably in iPx OS 4.0).

The Broadcom BCM4329 integrates a complete IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n system (MAC/baseband/radio) with Bluetooth

Netflix officially developing streaming app for iPhone

Following the release of its iPad app, Netflix has now elluded, via The Netflix Blog, that they will be working on an iPhone/iPod touch version of the app.  Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications, had the following to say in a post yesterday:

Terrific response to our news today about Netflix on the iPad. For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod Touch: We wouldn’t invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert. In other words, we’re working on it so stay tuned.

As always, we’ll keep you posted if we hear additional details.

FCC beats iFixit to the punch. Posts internal iPad shots (Update: Toshiba Flash, Broadcom I/O, Apple ARM Procesor)

Site default logo image

Engadget grabbed the FCC’s iPad takapart and posted it.  Unfortunately, the FCC covered all of the important chips and things.  TechRestore and iFixit, we’re betting, won’t.

Overall, it looks like the iPad is mostly battery and a few logic boards.  There is certainly some room in there for a camera, if Apple wanted to head down that road.

Update: iFixit and MacRumors uncovered the FCC blackout to reveal what we pretty much knew.  Apple’s ARM chip.  Broadcom I/O (like iPhone and iPod touch) and Toshiba Flash storage which shares Apple’s orders with Samsung.

Apple already removing dashboard/widget type applications from the iPad App Store?

Site default logo image

Interesting news from TiPb this afternoon.  It looks like Apple is not, in fact, cool with apps that behave like a dashboard.  It appears that Apple is removing the class of apps from the store…

Desktop, for example, no longer shows up via its iTunes link. These apps leveraged the large iPad display to offer multiple windows and mini-apps/widgets to get around some of iPhone 3.2

WSJ: iPad first impressions from commonfolk. Mossberg interviews

The Wall St. Journal’s Katie Boehret lets some passers by check out the iPad yesterday in D.C. It looks pretty sunny out there and it doesn’t seem to affect the experience too dramatically.

Also, Mossberg went on Fox Business and Digits to talk more about the iPad and its implications on the technology landscape, below.

Hot off a night of iPad unboxings and reviews as well as rumors of a possible Hulu iPad app, AppAdvice is saying that there will be a FREE Netflix app that available in the App Store come April 3rd when all you lucky folks are cracking open those boxes (sorry folks in the UK/everywhere else).

A supposed screenshot can be seen above.

What will Apple's iPad Remote.app look like?

Site default logo image

You can see from the above iTunes screenshot that the iPad will get a remote.app from Apple to control iTunes, FrontRow and AppleTV.  Apple has the opportunity to really do something special with the iPad remote for iTunes, however.  (Think video previews, mixing, Coverflow, etc.) Do you think they’ll exploit the new format or will the iPad Remote.app be the same as the iPhone/iPod touch variety?

WSJ: ABC, CBS, others bringing some shows to iPad for free

Site default logo image

http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/microPlayer.swf

So much for Steve Jobs’ $.99/episode model.  The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the iPad will be getting free shows (with commercials) from CBS and ABC.  ABC will be creating an iPad App that will inject commercials into its content and should be available shortly.

CBS Corp. and Walt Disney Co.’s ABC are adapting episodes of their TV shows to be viewable free of charge on Apple Inc.’s new iPad, according to people familiar with the matter, offering Apple new TV content as it prepares for the multimedia gadget’s Saturday release. The two U.S. networks are planning to stream their TV shows over the Internet with commercial breaks, similar to on their existing Web sites, people briefed on the plans said. CBS plans to stream episodes of TV shows through the iPad’s built-in Web browser, while ABC plans to stream its shows in an iPad application, the people said. CBS and ABC have struck a deal with Apple to stream some shows over the new iPad. By Saturday, CBS plans to have full episodes of the reality series “Survivor” ready for an iPad-specific version of its CBS.com Web site. It also plans to offer promotional clips of several other shows, including crime-solving drama “The Mentalist” and sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.”

So it looks like the networks might be looking to circumvent iTunes (and Hulu as well?).

Here they Come! Mossberg's iPad review hits the wires

Site default logo image

So much for everyone getting rid of Flash! Here’s his review: http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/microPlayer.swf

Walt starts pretty positive:

For the past week or so, I have been testing a sleek, light, silver-and-black tablet computer called an iPad. After spending hours and hours with it, I believe this beautiful new touch-screen device from Apple has the potential to change portable computing profoundly, and to challenge the primacy of the laptop. It could even help, eventually, to propel the finger-driven, multitouch user interface ahead of the mouse-driven interface that has prevailed for decades.

A couple of details from the video:

  • Walt played videos continuously and the battery lasted 11.5 hours!  That’s 15% more than Apple had claimed it would last!  We could get used to these underestimates on battery life…
  • He found the onscreen keyboard easy to use and NOT a hassle
  • Walt says “program” kind of funky…
