In case you forgot: Apple sends out iPad pickup reminders

Site default logo image

Thanks Mark for the image

You remember that $600 purchase you reserved earlier this month and you’ve been thinking about constantly since?  Well, Apple is here to remind you that you should head over to your Apple Store to pick it up on April 3rd.  OK?

Wedding?  Funeral? Hospital?  In Jail?  No excuses.  If, for some reason, you don’t pick it up by 3PM, you go to the back of the line.  No Soup for You!

Phillip M sends in his reminder as well.

AppleTV Take 3

The language of Apple’s iPad video has me wondering if Apple may be thinking iPad as a long term direction for AppleTV.

The technology for wirelessly sending a 1080P signal to a receiver connected to a HDTV is maturing.  802.11N is fast enough to stream compressed HD video (from a Time Capsule or Mac Mini Home Server…or North Carolina) and, at some point soon, Apple’s mobile processors will be able to do the heavy lifting of putting a compressed HD stream wirelessly onto a 1080P screen.

This all seems like a generation away at the most, technically speaking.  iPad would be the remote that is actually powering the content.  I like it.

iTunes 9.1 Released with iPad Support

Today Apple released an update to iTunes which brings complete support for the iPad. Unless you have been on Pluto the last 3 months, you would know the iPad comes out this upcoming weekend. This update is out right on time and allows iPad syncing, and brings Books control. Also, you now have more control over Genius playlists.

Mapquest App brings free basic turn by turn voice instructions

Site default logo image

One area where the iPhone currently lags behind Android 2.1 phones is Mapping.  The iPhone maps application has only had minor updates since its unveiling in 2007 and isn’t great for car usage.  Sure you can buy $100 apps that give you full turn by turn directions but most don’t give you what Google’s free full solution does.  We’d be surprised if that wasn’t addressed in the iPhone 4.0 OS, though.

In the meantime, Mapquest today updated their free iPhone app to include “basic” voice turn-by-turn functionality.  We’ve yet to try this but it’s probably the best we’ll see until June.  Download it now for iPhone here.

iPhone to have 960×640 double-resolution display? (Updated)

Site default logo image

John Gruber took the opportunity of the Wall Street Journal‘s post today on the Verizon iPhone to tout his sometimes obvious, but also new tidbits of information.  While the WSJ talked about a Verizon iPhone, Gruber segues to the general iPhone 4G which he says will have a front-facing camera (no kidding!), an Apple chip (like they’d go back to Samsung now?), and third party multi-tasking (which was pulled from 3.x at the last moments).

He also mentions that the screen will be 960×640, which is double the current resolution (double height, double width).  While its pretty obvious that Jobs would get laughed off the stage if he tried to release another 320×480 iPhone

iPad Firmware Download Leaked and Apple Slips iPad OS 4.0

Site default logo image

As reported earlier, Apple released the final Golden Master seed of the iPad 3.2 SDK. This allows developers to build their apps to run on the iPad via the App Store starting April 3rd. Now Apple has uploaded 2 interesting files to their download servers. The actual firmware installed on the iPad and the iPad’s legal documentation.

What the new firmware holds is yet to be determined, but the legal documents shed light on a lot of new information. First, all iPad software updates including major ones will be free of charge. Second, Apple informally announced the availability of iPad/iPhone OS 4.0.

From Apple in Document:

Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. Such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models.

Developers: Submit iPad Apps for Final Review

Site default logo image

Today Apple announced that developers have until March 31st at 5 PM Pacific Time to get their final apps in. This means the Final 3.2 GM seed is now available for developers to download from the portal.

Additionally, MacRumors notes that release notes for the GM seed reveal that the iPad will get one free major update.  Owners will be forced to pay after that.  For instance, people who buy an iPad now will get 4.x updates free as of this summer but will have to pay for 5.x updates whenever they come out.

From Apple:

Apple working on two new iPhones, one for Verizon for September

Site default logo image

Verizon iPhone.  Those two words almost pain my ears at this point, but the Wall St. Journal is wheeling them out once again.  After many false starts, they have the Verizon iPhone happening in September after an initial launch on AT&T this Summer:

The people briefed on the matter said one of the new iPhones is being manufactured by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which produced Apple’s previous iPhones. The model that has CDMA capability, used by Verizon Wireless, is being manufactured by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan’s ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people.

Obviously no one would comment on the story but AT&T did manage to chuck this one out there:

“There has been lots of incorrect speculation on CDMA iPhones for a long time. We haven’t seen one yet and only Apple knows when that might occur,” said an AT&T spokesman.

iTunes 9.1 to be released with iPad, contains eBook support, automatic bitrate conversion?

Site default logo image

Macrumors reports that iTunes 9.1 will be released alongside the iPad and will include a number of enhancements including:

  • ‘Audiobooks’ section will now be ‘Books’ and contain all Book content: audio, eBook, etc compatible with the given device (iPod, iPhone, iPad)
  • Genius Mixes will include songs that go great together, “users will have more control over Genius Mixes, including the ability to rename mixes and rearrange them by dragging. Users will also be able to delete Genius Mixes by right clicking on them. Genius Mixes will also reportedly be available as sources for the iTunes DJ shuffle feature.”
  • Support to automattically update songs to 128-bit AAC – like the Shuffle currently does – to save space
  • It will have tweaked summary panes (including a move of the “Check for Update” and “Restore” buttons to the left side of the pane)

It will be interesting to see how Apple organizes its Books section because there are so many confusing things going on here with iBookStore, Amazon’s Kindle Store, Audible, third party book apps, etc.

Apple ups iPad shipments to 8-10 million for calendar year 2010?

Site default logo image

According to Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley (who has an admittedly spotty record), Apple is almost doubling its production of iPads to 8-10 million for calendar year 2010.  That up from an initial estimated run of 5+ million.  Other findings:

  • Suppliers now expect to ship 2.5 million in the first three months alone (March to May), considerably ahead of Huberty’s estimate of 750,000 by the end of June.
  • Shipments are not sales, however, and Huberty is sticking with her sales estimate of 6+ million iPads in 2010. The Street’s consensus, she says, is closer to 3-4 million.
  • Each incremental one million iPads shipped, by her calculation, equates to earnings increases of roughly $0.25 EPS.

New York Times' videos to play on iPad for launch?

Site default logo image

Apple may be able to keep those New York Times homescreen videos on their iPad demo videos afterall.  Brightcove last night sent out a press release (below) saying that they’ve developed an HTML5 solution for their partner’s websites.  That includes the New York Times (a Brightcove investor) and Time, both of which should be available at launch, this week.

The New York Times and TIME Inc. are already using the product, which provides support for intelligent device detection, playlist rendering, and playback of H.264 encoded video content.

Interestingly, Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove’s founder and CEO, was also the founder of ColdFusion which was purchased by Macromedia in in 2001.  At Macromedia, Jeremy became CTO and helped create the Macromedia MX (Flash) platform before leaving and starting Brightcove in 2004.

Some of Brightcove’s customers (also IDG/Computerworld)

When you consider that the WSJ, NPR, CBS, and now Brightcove’s customers will have Flash replacements at the launch of the iPad, it looks like Steve Jobs’ crusade to get HTML5 video out the door has been pretty successful so far.

As of this writing, the NYTimes.com and Time.com still don’t play video on the iPad simulator but we’ll be keeping an eye out for any changes.

Brightcove press release follows:

Hi Seth,

Just wanted to give you a heads up that today Brightcove is announcing a free solution that will make it easy for Brightcove customers to adapt their online video content so it is playable in HTML5-compatible devices like the iPad. The new platform solution, Brightcove Experience for HTML5, helps Brightcove customers bring high quality, interactive and advertising-supported online video to more customers, specifically those using devices that do not support Flash.

The New York Times and TIME Inc. are already using the product, which provides support for intelligent device detection, playlist rendering, and playback of H.264 encoded video content. All of Brightcove’s 1,300+ customers will be able to take advantage of Brightcove Experience for HTML5 today.

I’ve included the press release below for your reference. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Samantha

Dashboard comes to iPad as an app?

Site default logo image

There had been some question of whether Apple was going to introduce a dashboard to the iPad. Developer Richard Hong gives us his take on it (non-Flash):

By the way developers, if you have an interesting app, sent it along to tips@9to5mac and we’ll try to get them some airtime.

Apple starts shipping iPads

Site default logo image

We’ve received a number of reader reports that iPads have begun shipping.   At this time, it only appears to be the Wifi models and even though we are five days out, even those with expedited shipping are expected to see theirs on April 3rd.  Have you got your notice yet?
