Apple beginning to let more users off of Genmoji waitlist in iOS 18.2 beta

Apple released iOS 18.2 developer beta 1 earlier this week, with ChatGPT support, Image Playground, Image Wand, and Genmoji. However, the latter image generation features required a waitlist, one that many found themselves stuck on. A small number of users gained access quickly, but the vast majority have been waiting, unable to access the new features.

However, a decent wave of users have reported gaining access today.

On Friday, Apple made a statement to developers, writing that the rollout would occur “over the coming weeks.” Although that made it sound like it might take a while, it seems that the wait might not be too bad.

A number of users on social media have started reporting gaining access to the feature set in the past hour or so, as well as some people I know personally who were unable to access the features when the beta rolled out on Wednesday.

That being said, I imagine there are still a number of users who don’t have access yet.

I’ve had access since downloading and install 18.2 last week to both Genmoji and Image Playground. That’s crazy that everyone has been on a waitlist.

Apple has repeatedly emphasized its set of Responsible AI principles. As part of this, Apple is taking precautions to identify how its AI tools may be misused or lead to potential harm. This is an acknowledgment of the fact that generative AI models, including those powering the image generation features in iOS 18.2, can lead to unexpected results.

“We take precautions at every stage of our process, including design, model training, feature development, and quality evaluation to identify how our AI tools may be misused or lead to potential harm. We will continuously and proactively improve our AI tools with the help of user feedback,” Apple promised when it first debuted Apple Intelligence in June

Did you gain access to Genmoji and Image Playground today, or are you still on the waitlist? Let us know in the comments.
