iOS 26.6 includes key feature that prepares your iPhone for iOS 27

Apple has just debuted the RC version of iOS 26.6 and its companion updates, and the company’s official release notes confirm the inclusion of a feature meant to prepare your iPhone for iOS 27.

It’s unusual for Apple to explicitly mention a future software update in its release notes for a brand new update.

But that’s what happened today following the iOS 26.6 RC release.

This update includes bug fixes, security updates and optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27.

Bug fixes and security updates are largely what we were expecting from iOS 26.6, since the beta has revealed next to nothing in terms of new features.

But the mention of Spotlight indexing is an interesting one.

When the iOS 27 beta first shipped last month, developers noticed that their iPhones were busy indexing for extended periods of time. In many cases the index took a week or even longer.

It turns out, Apple doesn’t want to repeat that experience with the public when iOS 27 launches this fall.

Instead, it’s using iOS 26.6 to do much of the indexing work ahead of time, thus preparing for a smoother iOS 27 experience.

So if you install iOS 26.6 and notice your iPhone is doing Spotlight indexing, there’s a good reason for it, as iOS 27’s new Siri and Spotlight overhauls will benefit from the advance work.
