Reachability Opinion

I have an iPhone 6 plus and find the design of “Reachability” perplexing.  When you double tap the home button – the entire screen shifts down making things that were not reachable before, reachable (one handed). But the fact that the keyboard shifts down as well and is now hidden, it seems 50% useless to me.  Shouldn’t reachability have a “Right Handed” and ‘Left Handed” setting and when you double tap your home button, the whole screen reduces in size to about the size of an iPhone 4 or 5 and moves down to the right hand corner for right handed folks and left hand corner for lefties?  What do you think?

  1. You are asking a Samsung feature, to shrink the whole screen to 4 inch. Apple won’t do it. So now, what can we do? I invented #nobiggi finger strap. It is not only improves thumb’s reach, but significantly improves overall comfort for your hand, and avoids accidental drops. Questions find me on twitter or our website. Order it on Amazon.

You’re using it wrong. The idea of “Reachability” is so that you can access buttons or text fields that are usually located at the top of the screen that then can be accessible at the bottom while you’re using your phone with one hand. The keyboard is always at the bottom half of the screen, therefore it’s reachable. That’s all, it’s not a “ONE HANDED MODE” nor does Apple proclaim it to be a “mode”, so you should only be using it momentarily.

What do I think? You’re using it wrong! Apple will eventually expand accessibility, but you should forget the good old days of “one-handed” use with these new phones, particularly if you purchased the PLUS. Reachability only solves the issue of UI elements being too far to, let’s say it again…to “reach” as the name implies.
