iPhone 4 OS live

Site default logo image

We’re searching the interwebs for a live stream of today’s event and we’ll embed the best we find here (feel free to post live streams in the comments). If you are into the liveblog thing, I’ll be doing instant analysis at Computerworld.  Check the 15 iPhone 4 expectations here.

Or destroy the universe with the classic “blast from the past” 9to5mac livepanel for big screens.  (Old logo thrown in at no extra cost!)

Mac (not Pro) desktop with USB 3.0-Mini DisplayPort combo detailed in patent

Site default logo image

Before you get all emotional, remember that this is just part of a patent application:

This looks like a paired down Pro workstation with some of the same characteristics, but with notable exceptions:

  • Rounded edges like a Mini
  • Much smaller in size and shape
  • A new Mini DisplayPort adapter that would combine with USB 3.0 and have a new connector
  • This new adapter would also work with iPads and media players

Macworld.au: New MacBooks next week

Site default logo image

The Australian arm of Macworld is reporting that a source “familiar with Apple product cycles and inventory levels” is saying we’ll see that long awaited MacBook Pro update on Tuesday April 13th.  He/she says all lines of MacBook will receive updates with the possible exception of the MacBook Air which he/she can’t confirm.  Numerous reports have had Apple’s Core iX lineup of MacBook Pros coming in April.

Macworld.au’s source also says the rollout for iPads internationally will be April 24th.  That’s also what the Canadians are expecting.

Best Buy is currently out of all but one model of MacBook Pro but Amazon and Apple stores both have, what appear to be, regular stocks.

Apple producing 5-7 inch, $400 mini-iPad for 2011?

Site default logo image

Digitimes quotes its own research arm in discovering that Apple is building a 5-7 inch mini iPad for delivery as early as the the first quarter of 2011.  The analyst states that the price of the new product would come in around $400.  The move would be more direct competition to Dell’s Mini 5-sized application and would also be more of competitor size and price-wise to the Kindle.

The post also mentions that the HP Slate is due this summer and will be manufactured by Inventec.  They don’t give it much of a chance to take on the iPad because Intel’s processors running Microsoft Windows 7 will run much hotter and drain the battery much quicker than Apple’s choice of ARM/iPX OS.

Apple hires ex-Sun Chief Counsel for upcoming IP battles

Apple’s hiring the big guns for its upcoming battles with everyone in the mobile devices industry.  Noreen Krall, Sun’s former Chief Counsel, and someone Apple would probably have had much contact with over the years, is now an Apple employee.

She’ll now be Apple’s Senior Director, IP Law and Litigation and actually started last month.

Noreen describes her work at Sun as:

New iPhone ad – "Shopper"

Site default logo image

Apple has released a new iPhone ad, based around shopping for a gift, fittingly called, “Shopper.”  The ad features only one actual app from the App Store, RedLaser ($1.99), compared to the typical three to four that Apple normally features in ads.

iPad issues: Wifi weakness, storage discrepancies, iPhone App suckage

Site default logo image

Overall, my experience with the iPad has been pretty good, but like all products, it has its faults.  Yesterday, TechCrunch outlined what many of us iPad early adopters had noticed.  Wifi range was significantly less than our Macs and even less than iPhones and iPod touch.

Two reasons for this might be the antenna placement and power consumption.

There are two Wifi antennas on the iPad.  One behind the glass on the lower bezel and one behind the Apple logo in the back.  The rest of the iPad ‘s aluminum is basically a wireless shield.  Compared to an iPhone whose backing is plastic, iPads are at a disadvantage right from the begining.

Also, there is the issue of power savings.  Apple touts 10 hours of video playback and they’re right.  The iPad has insanely long battery life, especially with that bright, beautiful display.  But Apple might have lowered the power to the Wifi cards in order to get those results.  The good news, if that is the case, is that a software/firmware update could add more power to the Wifi cards and increase range.  I’d like to see a manual/automatic setting which allows you to toggle between the iPad choosing its Wifi strength vs. users picking a power setting manually

HTML5 Video here.

I am in agreement with every person on earth that Time’s $5/issue-each-week-is-its-own-app is crazy.  The format though is beautiful.  It will be interesting to see how these magazines evolve.  It will also be interesting to see if the “weekly” and “monthly” models fall by the wayside and content is more Just-in-Time like the web.

PCWorld 'stress tests' an iPad

Site default logo image

No, that isn’t PC World’s tests above but its the same general idea as their tests.  Don’t drop it on the floor four times or pour a pot of hot coffee on it and you should be good.  Also important news from PC World: You can navigate with a donut.  Way to waste $500.

Update: Another ‘test’ below.

iPad goes to work

Site default logo image

Geek Sugar today profiles using the iPad as a Point of Sale system at Sightglass Coffee Shop in San Francisco.  They use the Square headphone jack credit card reader (white, top left) and also have built a pretty awesome rotating enclosure for the device.

I think this type of use for the iPad will be pretty popular.  The bigger-than iPhone size makes it easy to operate like a traditional cash register and its price at $500 is competitive with other POS systems.  Square is demonstrated in the YouTube video below:

Apple sells 300,000 Wifi iPads on the first day of sales

Site default logo image

It looks like Piper’s Gene Munster was off by more than half.  Apple today announced first day sales of 300,000 iPads, which did not include the 3G models.  Apple counts shipments (not sales) to retail partners (Best Buy, Apple Specialists) as well.  In addition, Apple said that users downloaded an average of more than three apps and one book within hours of plugging their iPads in.  That brought totals to 250,000 ebooks and over a million apps.

Press Release follows:
