VLC media player is one of the most popular media players for both Mac and Windows. It is able to play multiple video formats with no problem. However, the iTunes M4V video format is an exception. You may be used to play videos via VLC, but it refused to play the iTunes videos when you try to directly play the videos from iTunes library.
Why? The M4V movies and TV shows bought from iTunes Store are protected by Apple’FairPlay, and they can’t be played on non-Apple devices or video players.
So how? If you prefer to play the videos in iTunes store with VLC, you need to remove DRM from iTunes M4V videos first, and then add the files to VLC for playback.
The necessary tool: DRM Media Converter for Mac or for Windows
System requirement:
For Mac users: Mac OS X 10.8, 10.9, 10.10; iTunes 11
For Windows users: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 (32 bit & 64 bit)
Others:
Mac or Windows computer;
iTunes installed;
VLC installed.
Step 1: Add iTunes M4V videos to DRM Media Converter
Install and launch the iTunes DRM Media Converter on Mac, click “Add” button on the top left of the program or “Add files” button on the center to import the iTunes movies or TV shows you want to convert.
One thing I like this DRM removal is that it could directly find the iTunes library, so it is very easy and simple to find and choose the iTunes videos.
Tips: make sure that the video can be smoothly played on iTunes before converting. Otherwise, the conversion would fail.
Step 2: Start converting iTunes M4V videos for VLC playack
Click button “Convert Now” on the bottom right to start conversion from iTunes M4V to VLC supported MP4 videos.
This iTunes DRM removal could keep the original iTunes video subtitles and audio tracks after conversion. Thus, you have the choice to choose the language you prefer to play the converted video with VLC.
Feature: its conversion speed is pretty fast. Much faster than other DRM removals I have tried before.
Tips: the trial version only converts the first five minutes of the iTunes videos.
I purchased the full version without trying, aha, it is worthy anyway. I made a good decision.
Step 3: Find the Converted MP4 video
When the conversion is finished, you can find the converted files by clicking the “History” button on the top. By clicking “Open Output Folder” or clicking the search button, you could go to the converted file location immediately.
Step 4: Play Converted MP4 video via VLC
Now, just choose your converted MP4 videos from iTunes and open them with VLC video player. That’s it!
