Check out our top stories on iOS Devices:

iPhone's developing world 'feature phone' challenge

Site default logo image

iPhone is dominant across four continents when it comes to mobile website marketshare, the latest Motally data as reported by VentureBeat informs.

However, Apple still faces challenges outside of North America from the likes of Symbian (Nokia) and cheap, generic ‘feature phones’ equipped with some form of Web access. How long until smartphones come in affordable enough to clean-up in this segment?

“The most interesting trend in the data is the large amount of mobile website traffic that is done on feature phones, particularly in regions like South America, Asia and even Europe.  These regions house the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), which many economists believe will be major drivers of global economic growth in coming years.”

Bing goes the iPhone. Microsoft and Apple discussing Bing as default search on Mobile Safari

Site default logo image

According to Businessweek, Apple is in talks with Microsoft to drop Google search as the default on Mobile Safari on the iPhone and iPod Touch.  The move would place Bing, Microsoft’s recently rebranded search, at the top of the mobile browser.  The reason would be twofold.  One: Microsoft would offer more money for users who click on ads from search and two, because Google’s Android is a much bigger threat to Apple’s iPhone than anything Microsoft can muster.

Interestingly, Apple may also add Bing as an option in Desktop Safari as well, according to their sources.  The deal, if finalized, may not be a long one however.  Businessweek closes by saying that Apple is working on a skunkworks search product of their own and they don’t want to ‘outsource the future’.

Acer founder Shih: US PC companies will disappear within the next 20 years

Site default logo image

Apple, HP, Dell?  All dead.  That’s what Acer boss Stan Shih is forecasting for US PC makers in 20 years’ time.

“The trend for low-priced computers will last for the coming years,” said Stan Shih, high tech entrepreneur and founder of the island’s leading personal computer brand according to the Taipei-based Commercial Times newspaper.

“But US computer makers just don’t know how to put such products on the market… US computer brands may disappear over the next 20 years, just like what happened to US television brands.”

Acer passed Dell this year to be the #2 global PC maker and is on track to surpass HP next year.

Do you think the PC will even be around in 20 years?  With the way smartphones and now tablets are progressing, I think 10 years is a long shot.

Bootcamp 3.1 for Windows 7 is released

Site default logo image

Apple has released Bootcamp for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit  (or through Software Update).  The release was originally timed to be at the end of last year and supports Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate.

Remember, Apple only supports Windows 7 on some Intel machines.  To see if you are one of the lucky ones, check here.

To upgrade from Vista, you’ll also need the update utility which unmounts the disk and updates it for Windows 7.

Have fun with that.

The name game: iPad now registered by Apple

Site default logo image

We heard less than an hour ago that BGR had got word that ‘iTablet’ was the name for Apple’s rumored device.  MacRumors was hedging on ‘iSlate’ earlier but now have revealed that Apple has registered ‘iPad’.

Honestly at this point, we’re throwing up our hands.  The more we read, the less we know.

Apple's Lala team will soon put iTunes into the Cloud?

Site default logo image

TechCrunch this morning has a guest post by MP3.com founder Michael Robertson on what Apple plans to do with Lala.com.  Contrary to some predictions, Apple doesn’t plan to have a subscription based service according to Robertson.  Instead, he sees Apple using Lala’s ability to upload music to the cloud, classify it, and then play music from a browser.  Any browser including a smartphone browser….

What is of value is the personal music storage service which was an often overlooked component of Lala

Access everything on your iPhone

Online backup service Carbonite has introduced an iPhone app for mobile file access.

The Carbonite iPhone app allows customer to log in to their Carbonite account from an iPhone or iPod touch. Files backed up from the user’s PC or Mac hard drive can then be accessed and viewed through their mobile browser, as well as attached to an email sent from the device. The app also has an offline mode, where cached content can be accessed at any time.

Features of the Carbonite app include:

  • Browse: Users can browse backed up files directly on an iPhone or iPod Touch
  • View: Files including PDFs, images, audio, video, and Office documents can be opened and viewed on the mobile device
  • Share: Users can attach any file to an email with a single tap, allowing access to all files from anywhere, anytime.

Gartner: Apple made 99.4% of all phone app sales revenue in 2009, only the beginning

You could say that Apple is so far dominating the market for apps in portable devices.  Or you could, like a Gartner report reported by Ars states, say that Apple is absolutely obliterating the rest of the field.  Using their slide rules and impecable guessing abilities, they’ve concluded that Apple is responsible for all but .6% of the global market in app sales.  And that is without a tablet store.

That’s just the begining. As app sales increase, estimated revenues go from $4.2 billion in 2009 to $6.8 billion this year, to about $30 billion in 2013.

The report also noted that advertising wsa going to play a bigger part in app revenue and that Apple picking up Quattro was a smart move.

FoxNews: Event will be Tablet, iPhone OS 4.0 and iLife 2010

Site default logo image

Is the Tablet unveiling not enough to get you excited?  Well, FoxNews reporter Clayton Morris has a little more information on the event.  According to his sources, not only will the tablet be unveiled, a whole new iPhone OS (4.0) and iLife suite will be revealed.

I spoke to a source at Apple this morning, before the invite hit my inbox, who said the event would likely focus on three projects: The tablet device, iPhone 4, and a new round of iLife 2010 software. While we won’t see new iPhone hardware just yet, we will see the next-generation software.

The trio of products makes sense.  You are going to need some apps on the tablet and what better way to start than with Apple’s iLife suite?  Also, word is that Apple’s been holding up any releases of the iPhone OS because it contained references to the tablet.  Obviously, once the tablet is revealed, Apple can continue releasing iPhone software, though Fox didn’t specify whether or not it would be ready at the event or just shown off.

Acrobat.com turns your iPhone into a fax machine

Site default logo image

Update: This isn’t getting great reviews so we’re pulling it off the front page.

Adobe and ScanR just released Acrobat for the iPhone (free App Store). The application allows you to access your Acrobat.com files from anywhere but probably most impressively, it allows you to fax anything on your iPhone to any phone number via an in-app purchase.  You can snap a picture of a document or whatever and fax it to someone only using your iPhone.

Screenshots below.  From the developer:

You can use the iPhone 3Gs camera to scan physical documents right into your Acrobat.com account! The application comes with the ability to scan up to 5 pages and fax 2 pages for free; then it will prompt you to purchase additional scan and fax pages through in-app Purchase. This is the perfect complement to your Acrobat.com account to let you work from anywhere, at anytime!

The Tablet Prophecies

Site default logo image

Patently Apple is going over all of Apple’s past patent applications that deal with tablets and a tablet interface this week (coincidence?).  There is a lot there and they detail so much of what Apple has been working on in the tablet space.  It is almost enough to make your head explode.  Not convinced?  Check out some of the images below.  We’re especially fans of the DJ and video application patents.  Oh, and this is only part 1.

Square iPhone credit card payment system demoed

Site default logo image

Digg founder Kevin Rose does a quick demo of the Square payment system for iPhone (oh yeah, he’s now an investor). The system looks pretty innovative overall but it will be interesting to see if they can get the credit card companies to lower their margins on the transactions enough to make it worthwhile.

What percentage of a credit card transaction would you be willing to give up for the convenience?  3%? 6%?  10%?

By the way, were you quick enough to get the numbers off of Kevin Rose’s Platinum Amex card?

iPhone hits Mauritius before iTunes Store

Site default logo image

Mark Twain once said:

From one citizen you gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.

Apple might have gotten their order of operations in Mauritius reversed as well.  Orange is selling the iPhone in Mauritius but without an iTunes store.  That means that you can’t buy anything from Apple, but you can use the iTunes application to upload media.  Without a jailbreak there is no way to get your hands on any of those 100,000+ apps out there.

As Steven Sande notes at TUAW, Mauritian iPhone users are trying to get Apple to build them an iTunes store.  They’ve even set up a Facebook page.

We’ve confirmed Orange is definitely selling the iPhone in Mauritius though nowhere in the advertising do they mention that the iPhone can download apps, music or movies.  In fact, it is conspicuously absent.

Not to worry though citizens of Mauritius, Apple has just hired Liesbeth Matthieu to be its iTunes Localization Producer.  She’s got a French and English background which should be perfect for building out an iTunes store for your French-English populace.
