Video shows working version of what appear to be official Apple Lightning Earpods

A video has been posted by a mobile accessory company showing a working version of what appear to be Apple’s official Lightning Earpods. We’re expecting Apple to supply these with the iPhone 7, the first iPhone without a 3.5mm headphone jack.

As with many claimed iPhone 7 photos and videos, it’s impossible to say for sure whether we’re looking at the real thing or a mockup, but while there is plenty of motivation to create mockup phones to allow cases and other accessories to be made, there is much less incentive to create fake earphones …

What we can say is that Mobile Fun demonstrates that the Earpods work, we can see that the finish is of a high quality and the design is consistent with Apple’s existing 3.5mm Earpods. They appear very similar to photos seen a few weeks ago.

It’s not 100% certain that Apple will supply Lightning Earpods with the iPhone 7, but this does seem the most likely bet. Supplying wireless earphones would almost certainly be ruled out on cost grounds, and while some have suggested that Apple will instead supply a 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter, this would seem an odd way to promote a new standard.

If you plan instead to go the wireless route, there’s a huge range of options open to you, from the cheap-and-basic (review) through mid-range (review) to top-end (review) earphones. There are also already a number of third-party Lightning headphones on the market.
