A new report from Strategy Analytics offers up a look at estimated HomePod sales for the quarter ending in June. While this data lines up with what we heard from CIRP earlier this month as far as market share, the analysts’ sales estimations vary by over 1M units.

A couple of weeks ago, CIRP released a report estimating that Apple has sold 3 million HomePods in the US so far, taking a 6% market share of smart speakers.

In contrast Strategy Analytics’ new data puts HomePod shipments at 700,000 for calendar Q2. Paired with the firm’s previous report that Apple shipped just 600,000 units of the smart speaker in Q1 makes for just shy of 1.5M global shipments. However, the latest report for Q2 and CIRP’s data (H1 2018) both put HomePod at the same 6% market share.

All of this is a bit muddier due to the fact that CIRP was looking at just the US market and tracking sales, rather than global shipments. Notably, those factors could make CIRP’s HomePod estimates even more inflated if true shipments fall closer to what Strategy Analytics has estimated.

As for other trends from the most recent report, Amazon is still leading the smart speaker market with 41% share for Q2, but Google is gaining ground on the Echo lineup, as it grew to hold a 27.6% share.

To no surprise, Strategy Analytics noted HomePod’s high price as a limiting factor. Meanwhile, local smart speaker options in China gained more ground.

However, its high price continues to hamper demand for the HomePod. The Chinese market has grown rapidly so far this year as local players such as Alibaba, JD.com and Baidu follow the same strategic path set by Amazon and Google. As a result the Asia Pacific market has now risen to 20% of global smart speaker shipment demand.
