Apple just appealed the court ruling that forced big App Store change

Last week, Apple was handed a court decision in its Epic Games case that forced a major App Store rule change, and now the company has filed its notice of appeal.

Apple’s appeal seeks to overturn decision that opened the floodgates for external payment links in apps

As spotted by The Verge, Apple just filed its notice of appeal against the decision that deemed certain App Store rules anticompetitive.

The Apple vs. Epic Games case originally required Apple to allow apps some form of linking out to external payment options.

Apple decided to charge a 27% commission on such purchases, however. It also required a form of implementation that seemed designed to scare users off by emphasizing security risks.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers was not pleased. Thus, she ordered Apple last week to immediately drop any required commissions for external purchases. They were also forced to remove restrictions around how those external links are presented inside apps.

At the time, Apple said it strongly disagreed with the decision, but that it would comply and also file an appeal.

Now, both things have happened. Apple implemented App Store rules changes last week as a form of compliance, and today issued its notice of formal appeal.

It could take some time for the appeal process to play out. For now though, apps are permitted to link users out to third-party platforms for making payments like subscription purchases and more.

Major players like Spotify wasted no time implementing the change.
