Threads users can now join group chats during live events

With the new Live Chats feature, Threads users can join public, real-time group conversations built around major live events. Here are the details.

Threads doubles down on community-driven engagement

Threads announced Live Chats today, a feature that looks like a cross between classic group chats and trending topics.

With Live Chats, users can jump into public group chats during live events, like an NBA game, and take part in real-time conversations with others following along.

Once you join a chat, you can send messages — including photos, videos, and links — back and forth, and tap on reaction emojis to show how you feel. If the chat is full, you can still watch the conversation, react to messages, and vote in polls.

For now, only a small group of creators and Community Champions can host Live Chats. But once they do, they become publicly discoverable and accessible, even after the session ends.

Here’s how eligible users can start a Live Chat, according to Meta:

Eligible hosts can schedule a Live Chat to start by tapping the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner of their Community, and selecting Schedule a Live Chat. From there you can name your chat, choose a start and end time, and invite people to join. You can also share your Live Chat to your Threads feed and Instagram Story to spread the word.

Ongoing and upcoming live chats are listed at the top of communities, such as NBA Threads. Once the user joins the conversation, they can access it from the Messages tab, like any other one-on-one or group chat in the app.
