ESPN app recently got big upgrade on Apple TV 4K and iPhone

Fall is a big season for sports fans, and ESPN recently launched a big upgrade for users of its tvOS and iOS apps: 4K HDR streaming.

ESPN streaming service now supports 4K HDR, with tvOS and iOS apps first to add support

In the last few weeks, ESPN began rolling out a big upgrade in its tvOS and iOS apps.

The streaming service now offers 4K HDR quality for top programming, including live games from the NFL, NBA, NHL, and more.

From ESPN’s press release last month:

This week, ESPN and ESPN2 will begin rolling out in 4K HDR in the U.S., elevating picture quality for fans during one of the highest stakes stretches of the year for live sports. This includes all ESPN productions of Monday Night Football, NBA and NHL plus select live events across college football and US Open tennis, and marquee live events like Super Bowl LXI. This update will deliver clearer edges, sharper colors and smoother movement — all critically important for delivering a richer and more immersive viewing experience for sports fans.

The ESPN App on iOS and tvOS will be the first to support the new experiences, with additional connected TV platforms to follow, as well as on Disney+ in the U.S. to ESPN Unlimited subscribers.

When browsing the ESPN app, you’ll see a new ‘4K HDR’ tag for content that supports the higher-quality video stream.

If you have a strong internet connection at home or on the go, 4K HDR will provide a more vibrant, crisp, premium image for your favorite sports content.

For any sports fans tempted to splurge on an Apple TV 4K for the first time, we recommend holding out just a little bit longer. The wait for a new Apple TV model is reportedly almost over.

Have you watched ESPN since it launched 4K HDR content? How did it look? Let us know in the comments.
