Apple TV’s new podcast explores haunting true story involving a heart transplant

Apple TV today announced “Heart,” an original eight-episode true-crime podcast involving two men linked by a donated heart and the same terrible demise. Here are the details.

The lives and deaths of two men linked by a single heart

Although far fewer in number than its movies and series, Apple TV has steadily expanded its lineup of original podcasts since 2021, releasing several titles spanning true crime, investigative journalism, comedy, and companion podcasts for its shows.

That includes “Adrift,” “Unicorn Girl,” “Pluribus: The Official Podcast,” and “Magnificent Jerk.”

Today, the platform announced “Heart,” an eight-episode true-crime original podcast hosted by Karen Kilgariff, set to premiere on October 19.

Here’s Apple TV on what to expect from “Heart”:

When Sonny Graham receives a lifesaving heart transplant, he falls in love with his donor’s widow. What local newspapers hail as a miraculous love story takes a tragic turn when Sonny dies — the same way as his heart donor, Terry Cottle. In both cases, the official conclusion is suicide. As friends and family recall changes in Sonny’s behavior after the transplant, some question whether the heart he received could have carried traces of the donor’s trauma.

Apple TV says “Heart” is the result of years of investigative reporting, with the team behind the podcast piecing together court documents, public records, and firsthand accounts to investigate the circumstances surrounding both men’s deaths and their impact on their families.

Apple TV subscribers will get access to all eight episodes of “Heart” on October 19, while nonsubscribers will get the first three episodes on that date, followed by weekly releases every Monday through November 23.
