Best Buy hired private investigators, who found Lettera conducted 97 discounted purchases for himself, totaling $81,717, and 52 additional transactions for others, adding $36,573 in losses.
Police recovered several MacBook Pro models pawned by Lettera, citing local pawn store records and the employee’s thumbprint as evidence. The pawnshops cooperated with police in their investigation.
ArsTechnica reports that employee theft has become a bigger priority for investigations by retail chains, with high turnover of staff one of the factors in low detection rates. Another example cited in the report is a different Best Buy employee who allowed shoplifters to leave the store without paying for well over 100 products, including AirPods and Beats headphones.
