For the last few months, various reports have covered an especially noteworthy new film that’s been in the works at Apple TV.

What Happens at Night hails from director Martin Scorsese and features an exceptional cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, and Mads Mikkelsen.

Today Apple confirmed for the first time that the film exists and is in production, while also sharing the first image of DiCaprio and Lawrence in character.

The film is inspired by the Peter Cameron novel of the same name. Here’s the book’s plot summary:

An unnamed American couple travels to a strange, snowy European city to adopt a baby. It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child.

On arrival, the couple checks into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer. Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.

Release timing for the new film is uncertain. However, one report says production is scheduled to last through May. If filming does wrap that soon, we could see What Happens at Night premiere as early as this fall. That would make it a potential awards contender for next year’s Oscars.

Martin Scorsese has become a frequent collaborator with Apple. His previous film with DiCaprio, Killers of the Flower Moon, received lots of awards buzz after its release.

Scorsese also has an acting role in next month’s Keanu Reeves comedy Outcome, and appeared in The Studio last year as well as a new docuseries.

Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month, or you can get it discounted through the Apple One bundle.
