Apple releases new AirPods Max 2 firmware update

AirPods Max 2 arrive in stores tomorrow (read our 9to5Mac review here), and ahead of their launch, Apple has shipped new firmware for the headphones.

AirPods Max 2 get new firmware ahead of release

If you’re picking up a new pair of AirPods Max 2 tomorrow, Apple already has a new update ready to install.

Apple just released firmware build 8E251 for AirPods Max 2.

Exactly one week ago, Apple shipped new firmware for AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods 4.

Since the AirPods Max 2 include the same H2 chip as those devices, I speculated at the time that the firmware release might be intended for AirPods Max 2 as well.

It turns out, that’s not the case.

Instead, it seems Apple has an entirely separate firmware build prepared for the new AirPods Max.

Last week’s firmware was version 8B39, which Apple said brings “Bug fixes and other improvements.”

It’s unknown what exactly today’s AirPods Max 2 update is expected to change. Apple has yet to publish official release notes.

But just know that after getting your new AirPods set up, there will likely be an update that installs automatically in the background.
