In a video released today to his YouTube channel, Brandon Sanderson shared an exciting update on the progress of the Mistborn adaptation for Apple TV. Here are the details.
First draft is 50% done
Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Apple had acquired the coveted rights to Brandon Sanderson’s “Cosmere” books.
At the time, THR said that Sanderson had met “with most of the studio heads in town,” and that his deal with Apple gave him “rarefied control over the screen translations.”
The report added that Sanderson would “be the architect of the universe,” serving as writer, producer, and consultant, with approval rights, “a level of involvement that not even J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin enjoys.”
Now, Sanderson has given what seems to be the first pre-production update of the adaptation, and things are looking good:
According to Sanderson, the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay is halfway done, even though Apple hasn’t seen it yet:
The Mistborn screenplay is at 50%. I’m moving right along on that, had some good feedback from chatting with the studio and things like that, with Apple about what they’re expecting. They haven’t read it yet, but I’m feeling really good about how this is going.
As we noted when the deal was first confirmed, this is just the first of several planned adaptations of Sanderson’s work for Apple TV. The Mistborn series is being developed as features, while The Stormlight Archive series is set for a television adaptation.
So far, there’s no release timeline for the projects, but as things move along, Sanderson is expected to keep updating his fan base in his weekly videos. In addition, his yearly conference is scheduled for December, and both he and Apple will likely try to use the event to further build hype around what’s coming.
Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking and Silo.
