SmartGym expands personalization with custom heart rate zones and smarter routine tracking

SmartGym is rolling out a major update today, adding new ways to compare workouts over time, custom heart rate zones, new exercises, and more. Here are the details.

Update adds customization, granularity, and new exercises

I’ve been a SmartGym user for years, and it still amazes me how often the app gets major updates with several useful, interesting new features.

Today’s update is no different. It replaces the Monthly Summary view with the Workout Summary, which lets users toggle between weekly and monthly views and compare the current period with the previous one.

This way, users can get a better overall picture of their performance, whether over the short term or across longer stretches of training.

In fact, the update also brings weekly and monthly comparisons to individual routines, making it easier to track how specific groups of exercises evolve over time.

Another addition to today’s update is the new custom heart rate zones feature, which lets users define their own ranges for more accurate tracking.

Here’s what makes this an important change, according to SmartGym:

An experienced athlete and a beginner might have very different thresholds, and a one size fits all calculation doesn’t always tell the full story. With this update, users can now fully customize their heart rate zones. You can define the exact ranges that match your fitness level, your training style, and your goals. This is also especially important for users on medications like beta blockers, which can significantly lower resting and max heart rate.

Today’s update also introduces a welcome level of granularity with secondary muscles for custom exercises. Users who leverage this feature will get the same level of in-depth analysis and progress tracking as users who rely on the app’s built-in exercises.

And speaking of custom exercises, the app’s AI-powered Smart Trainer will now treat them just like built-in ones, meaning it can include them in suggested workouts and adapt routines around them over time.

Finally, today’s update adds multiple new exercises to its expansive gallery, complete with “primary and secondary muscles, equipment requirements, step by step instructions, and animations.”

SmartGym is free to download on the App Store and offers a wide variety of subscription options.
