Ryan Reynolds’ new Apple TV movie is a spy thriller with a comedy twist

Apple TV has a slate of big-budget, star-packed movies coming later this year, including a new spy thriller called Mayday that stars Ryan Reynolds. Here are the details.

Mayday is a new Ryan Reynolds movie coming to Apple TV in September

Apple’s next movie premieres later this month from first-time director John Travolta. But after that, summer will be huge for TV shows but fairly sparse for new films.

To kick off a busy fall though, Apple TV has a new film that it calls a “genre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that flips the spy thriller on its head.”

Mayday premieres Friday, September 4 on Apple TV.

The new movie stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh playing soldiers on opposite sides of the Cold War who form a surprising friendship.

Here’s Apple’s official plot summary:

When hotshot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly (Reynolds) is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War, the operation implodes, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. Discovered by Nikolai Ustinov (Branagh), a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, Troy thinks he’s toast — but could an unlikely alliance between the two lead to Troy’s rescue and a bond neither saw coming?

This will mark Reynolds’ second starring appearance on Apple TV, following the excellent holiday film Spirited with Will Ferrell.

Mayday sounds like the kind of movie that could be theatrical, but Apple will premiere the film directly on Apple TV instead. Despite F1: The Movie’s huge success as the box office last year, Apple currently has zero planned theatrical offerings in 2026.
