Apple marks first Apple TV 4K ‘vintage’ with new model imminent

The original Apple TV 4K from 2017 has just been added to Apple’s “vintage” products list. Here’s what that means.

Original Apple TV 4K is ‘vintage’ and may have reduced repair availability

If you’re still running the first Apple TV 4K model, which debuted nearly a decade ago, repairs for the product might get more complicated soon.

That’s because as spotted by MacRumors, the original Apple TV 4K has been marked “vintage” by Apple.

The company keeps a list of vintage and obsolete products here on its website.

  • ’Vintage’ means over five years have passed since a product stopped being available for sale
  • ’Obsolete’ means over seven years have passed since sales discontinued

If your product is marked “obsolete,” then Apple will no longer offer service or hardware repairs.

If it’s “vintage,” then Apple can still service it in most cases. However, that’s dependent on parts availability.

So if you have an original Apple TV 4K and might need to get it serviced, you’ll want to do that as soon as possible. Or alternatively, you can check out the new Apple TV 4K that’s being unveiled next Tuesday at the ‘Welcome home’ event.
