iPhone Duo sells out immediately, now backordered until next year

iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, went up for pre-order today. Within minutes of pre-orders opening, however, estimated delivery dates started slipping all the way to next year.

The first iPhone Duo pre-orders are set to arrive on October 23, but only for the lucky people who placed their order in time.

As of 8:30 a.m. ET, all iPhone Duo configurations are backordered until next year. All color and storage combinations show an estimated ship date of January 25. Some users are even seeing January 29 for their estimated shipping date.

This is a combination of strong demand and severely constrained supply for iPhone Duo. It’s impossible to know the exact balance between the two, though.

Glad thing I pre-preordered! Launched the Apple Store app exactly at 8:00AM, but the store didn't switch over until 30 seconds afterwards.

I was able to sneak in my order and tried to do an 8:00AM pickup, but that window closed during checkout. I went back and was able to snag the 8:15AM slot. As soon as the order processed, the blue standby screen came back up, so I panicked that the order didn't go through. Luckily, the email came in, the order was successful.

Went back to the app to mock-place another order and it slipped into December, and now it's January!

Kudos to all those who got in.

Going into the launch, there were multiple reports suggesting iPhone Duo would be in short supply as Apple was still ramping up production. A report from Nikkei Asia last month said Apple was making just a few hundred iPhone Duo units per day, significantly behind the ramp of a normal iPhone launch.

A quick glance on eBay reveals that there are already dozens of iPhone Duos available for pre-order from scalpers, asking as much as $5,200.

Did you secure an iPhone Duo pre-order this morning? If so, which configuration did you go for? What’s your estimated delivery date? Let us know down in the comments.
