Tweetie/Twitter official for iPad, update for Mac "coming soon" -Loren Brichter

Site default logo image

After picking up his Ars Design Award for Tweetie on Mac (which we love) Loren Brichter answered the question that lots of us wanted to know: Yes, Tweetie is going to be updated on the Mac AND it will be made into a superfabulous iPad app with features that Loren can’t even put into words.

“The goal is to exceed the Twitter iPhone app in the iPad,” he said. “I swear the reunification is coming between iPhone, Mac, and iPad.”

He also agrees with Dan Lyons that the Mac is waning and says that he looks forward to the day when he can develop on his iPad.  He doesn’t think the Mac is going anywhere soon, however.  If he did, he wouldn’t continue to develop Mac software.

“If you break the idea that we have to use software keyboards the traditional way, there’s so much potential for insanely fast programming,” Brichter said. “Think about keyboard buttons becoming whole variable names. You could become so efficient while programming!”

Oh, and a Mac App Store?

“I think that would be really sexy,” Brichter told us. “But does it fix the fundamental problem that the Mac is too complicated for some users? I don’t know.”

Google/Admob fire back on the Apple Analytics blockade

Site default logo image

Yesterday, it was revealed that Apple’s terms of service in its new developer agreement would preclude Google’s Admob and other Ad networks (like Microsoft) from doing business in the iPhone’s App Store.

Today, Admob’s CEO Omar Hamoui (who had been in negotiations just months ago to be purchased by Apple) says:

Apple proposed new developer terms on Monday that, if enforced as written, would prohibit app developers from using AdMob and Google

Death of the Mac foretold by WWDC 2010 Keynote?

Site default logo image

Nobody wants to really think about it, but perhaps Fake Steve/Dan Lyons is right in today’s Newsweek story?  The writing is on the wall for the Macintosh.  This week’s WWDC was all about the iOS, the Apple Design Awards were only iOS apps and Mac OS 10.7?  Not even a hint.  Mac IT technical tracks?  Gone.

Apple killed the ‘I’m a Mac’ commercials recently and has been pumping out iPad and iPhone ads like crazy.  It isn’t hard to make the argument that the Macintosh is being pushed to the side.

But then Lyons starts to put on his Fake Steve face a bit:

For one thing, with iOS 4, Steve gets to decide which apps can run on the platform. I mean he can literally pick and choose the apps. He gets to approve each one. He has total control. You know how Steve is about control. Also, those apps can only be sold in Steve

Apple Safari 5 download here

Site default logo image

After a few fits and starts, Safari 5 is ready for download here.  We’re not exactly sure what happened but the image we captured above might have something to do with the delay.

Press release below:

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple(R) today released Safari(R) 5, the latest version of the world’s fastest and most innovative web browser, featuring the new Safari Reader for reading articles on the web without distraction, a 30 percent performance increase over Safari 4,* and the ability to choose Google, Yahoo! or Bing as the search service powering Safari’s search field. Available for both Mac(R) and Windows, Safari 5 includes improved developer tools and supports more than a dozen new HTML5 technologies that allow web developers to create rich, dynamic websites. With Safari 5, developers can now create secure Safari Extensions to customize and enhance the browsing experience.

“Safari continues to lead the pack in performance, innovation and standards support,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari now runs on over 200 million devices worldwide and its open source WebKit engine runs on over 500 million devices.”

Safari Reader makes it easy to read single and multipage articles on the web by presenting them in a new, scrollable view without any additional content or clutter. When Safari 5 detects an article, users can click on the Reader icon in the Smart Address Field to display the entire article for clear, uninterrupted reading with options to enlarge, print or send via email.

Powered by the Nitro JavaScript engine, Safari 5 on the Mac runs JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4, three percent faster than Chrome 5.0, and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6.* Safari 5 loads new webpages faster using Domain Name System (DNS) prefetching, and improves the caching of previously viewed pages to return to them more quickly.

Safari 5 adds more than a dozen powerful HTML5 features that allow web developers to create media-rich experiences, including full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video. Other new HTML5 features in Safari 5 include HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 sectioning elements, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, HTML5 Ruby, HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource and WebSocket.

The new, free Safari Developer Program allows developers to customize and enhance Safari 5 with extensions based on standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The Extension Builder, new in Safari 5, simplifies the development, installation and packaging of extensions. For enhanced security and stability, Safari Extensions are sandboxed, signed with a digital certificate from Apple and run solely in the browser.

Pricing & Availability

Safari 5 is available for both Mac OS(R) X and Windows as a free download at www.apple.com/safari. Safari 5 for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard(R) 10.6.2 or later. Safari 5 for Windows requires Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista or Windows 7, a minimum 256MB of memory and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor. Full system requirements and more information on Safari 5 can be found at www.apple.com/safari. The Safari Developer Program is free to join at developer.apple.com/programs/safari.

*Performance will vary based on system configuration, network connection and other factors. All testing conducted by Apple in May 2010 on an iMac(R) 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system running Mac OS X 10.6.3, with 4GB of RAM. iPhone 4 vs. iPhone 3GS

Site default logo image

Thanks to Engadget’s handiwork, we now have a stat breakdown of the iPhone 4 vs. the older model.

Standout Numbers:

  • Quadband HSDPA.  That means likely T-Mobile 3G compatible.
  • Wireless: 802.11N finally – though iOS 4 might enable it on the 3GS
  • Gyroscope will do some interesting things.  Air mouse for instance – perhaps gaming on AppleTVs in the future?
  • Facetime is now an open standard which means Apple and partners will be building for other platforms like gulp* Android.
  • More Battery life, up to an hour of talk time more – that is a big one over Android who already lags in battery.
  • It weighs a few gams more but now is less than a centimeter thick!

WWDC coverage Livepanel

Site default logo image

We’re rolling out our good ol’ fashioned 9to5mac Livepanel which will be circulating the best feeds throughout the WWDC Keynote. As you might remember, this framed page shows four of the best feeds at once and is refreshed every 15-30 seconds so your mouse button finger doesn’t have to bleed. It works best on large (24″+) monitors and uses 1990’s html frames technology to bring sweet, sweet iPhone 4/HD information to your eyes as quickly as possible.

We are also Tweeting the bigger announcements on the 9to5mac twitter account and trying to find an audio or video feed of the event. We’ll just pop it in if we find one. Have fun!

Will we see last of PC Guy (Hodgeman) at WWDC today?

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LuzAGwlbVk&w=700&h=450]

Word on the street is that Apple has filmed a finale commercial to the ‘Get a Mac’ series but this time with just John Hodgeman.  The commercial was filmed at a bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn last week and get this: PC pretends to be a bartender and gets a guy drunk in order to get his hands on his new Apple prototype!!

Unfortunately, Justin Long isn’t the guy he’s getting drunk, he’s not in this one.

We think this is a likely opening to WWDC this year but aren’t 100% sure where it will be used.  We have multiple sources on this so consider it to be pretty reliable.  The video above is the opening of WWDC 2007.

Newton Prototype for sale on eBay

Site default logo image

Update: Is this the Batmobile Newton?  Maybe.  Bidding has pushed it up over $400.

If you are quick (and Apple isn’t reading this) you can pick up a piece of Apple history on eBay right now.  Someone is selling a prototype Newton MessagePAD Prototype DVT Unit.  From the description:

Differences between this unit and the final version is the labeling “Notepad” on the front (instead of Messagepad), it lacks “Newton” labeling at the top of the device, and on the back side there are stickers showing that this unit is not FCC approved.

It also appears to boot the Newton OS 1.3 as well.

Notice “NotePad” instead of Messagepad below:
