Is the iPad the future of in-flight entertainment? Let the trials begin…

Not much info from Engadget but nice to see some seriuz power efficiency.
Farewell Lala.com.
As it had warned, Apple closed its recently-acquired LaLa.com music streaming service last night. The company had confirmed plans to shutter the service earlier this year, saying, “In appreciation of your support, you will receive a credit in the amount of your Lala web song purchases for use on Apple’s iTunes Store.”
Speculation now must surely be focused on Apple
Giant trade show, Computex sees a wave of iPad pretenders this morning as the big tech event opens its doors.
No matter, as ARM president Tudor Brown reckons half of future tablet PCs will be ARM-based, just as the iPad is. Of course, as we know, Apple has sold two million iPads in just 60-days — just how much of the growth of the future tablet market will Apple seize?
ARM president Tudor Brown, at the company’s pre-Computex 2010 press conference told the throng that by 2014 there will be three billion end devices that will hook onto the Internet, of which, 1.6 billion will be mobile devices, 350 million home-used devices, 500 million mobile PCs, 200 million multimedia players, 100 million in-car electronics and 250 million PNDs and digital photo frames.
He anticipates ARM-based devices will account for 50 percent or more of the market in each segment, citing the low power consumption of ARM chips in comparison with competing systems. In future, Brown said, tablet battery life will reach one week or more.

You have to hand it to Google, they are doing what no other huge company (besides Apple) has the cahones to do: They are moving off of Windows and mostly to Mac, though some users will invariably go with Linux.

If a story from Zhongguancun Online News (A CBS subsidiary) is to be believed, Apple will be giving Foxconn employees a small percentage of the devices profits directly. The quote is 1-2% but it is unconfirmed.
As Apple typically has a 30-40% margin on their wares, this doesn’t seem like it would hurt their bottom line too badly and the PR would certainly help. Plus it might give those distraught employees something to live for. The paper also says the iPad will be the first device to start this scheme.
Apple will probably be commenting on this story if it true. Stay tuned?
Rough Google translation:
Sources said Apple will staff its products OEM Foxconn to provide direct financial subsidies, subsidies for the amount of profit for Apple products by 1% -2%.We have previously reported that Apple employees have been involved in the investigation chain Foxconn suicide cases. Apple believes that low wages or a major incentive for such cases. According to Apple, the proportion of Apple products at subsidized prices by 1% -2% of profits. First of all, will be subsidized is iPad product line employees. Apple iPad Foxconn currently paid to the OEM cost of 2.3% of product prices, subsidies that figure will reach 3%, this is a cost equivalent to iPad aluminum shell.
On the day Apple confirms it has sold in excess of two million iPads in just 60-days, pioneering work from one ad agency and developer, Chris Smoak is revealed, a solution which means you can look forward to accessing Flash content on your iPad, with or without an effective iteration of Flash for mobile. Read on.
Apple has sold two million iPads in under 60-days, despite lack of support for Flash. Some form of Flash support is close, as indie developers continue to explore new ways to get Flash-based content onto the iPad — without help from Apple, or Adobe. Read on…
Apple broke the Memorial Day peace today to declare it has sold over two million iPads in under 60-days since launch on April 3.
“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”

We’re not here to get into the debate of what is morally permissible to do to your old iPhones. We’re just saying that if you did want to try Android on your old iPhone 2G/3G, it is now stupidly easy. FunkySpaceMonkey shows how:
You will need:
Netflix works on the iPad, so why not release the app for iPhone? Oh, because it has a 3.5-inch display?
Bah! Says hacker Knisitruck at ModMyI who has made some small adjustments to the iPad app and has it working on his Jailbroken iPhone.
For you conspiracy theorists out there, the reason it was so easy to port the iPad app to iPhone was that it had an iPhone bundle built-in.
Turns out the Netflix iPad app appears to have a native iPhone app bundled in with the iPad app, hence the ability to make it work on the iPhone and the different layout for the iPhone etc.
So that probably means that a Netflix iPhone app was made and denied or one is coming soon. WWDC? Perhaps the iPhone experience isn’t what the powers that be thought would be reasonable.
What’s not to love? He lays it out in bullet points:
Oh, so that’s why there isn’t Netflix for iPhone…yet. Via Engadget. DIY instructions below:
To do this yourself
Now, just copied over SSH (with permissions repair and a respring) this will show up on the phone. With Netflix though, it required the mediaplayer frameworks from the iPad. So:
Now the mediaplayer frameworks are in place, all that’s left is a manual install of the app.
That’s about it. The way I found out that I needed the frameworks file was from a crash report.

According to the NYPost today, the US Department of Justice is doing an “outreach” program on Apple to find out how it is handling its dealings with not just the music business, but Hollywood in general.
“The [Justice Dept.] is doing outreach,” said one Hollywood industry source. “You can’t dictate terms to the industry. The Adobe thing is just inviting the wrath of everybody.” Added a senior source at a media company: “If Apple thinks it’s going to increase its monopoly with the iPad, it should look at the history of other walled gardens.”
After having recently surpassed Microsoft in market capitalization to become the biggest Tech company in the world, Apple is no longer the underdog fighting the Man. It is the Man. Companies like Adobe, Amazon and Media Players in Hollywood certainly would like to see Apple carefully scrutinized.
It has been an absurdly long time coming, but today Skype released Skype 2.0 for the iPhone with the capability to make calls over 3G networks. They’ve also put in some CD quality audio enhancements which seem to work pretty well according to our quick tests.
But don’t start celebrating yet. They’ve still found a way to fork up the program.
Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
So AT&T/Apple/Skype are going to be charging you a monthly fee starting in August to use Skype (and any other VoIP application?) that you are already paying for? Someone call the FCC!
Upgrades / improvements include:
– Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
– Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch.
– Enhanced call quality indicator.
– Improved start-up time.
– Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.

As if the iPhone 4/HD hadn’t been looked at enough, today some nice Czech folks did some microscope work on what appears to be a the 640×960 screen and found it to be…denser.. than current iPhone models. Surprise.
We’re not sure how/if they landed a new iPhone screen nor why we are looking at pixels and not other functionality of the device but here you go:

Did you count them? Compare that to the current iPhone 3GS screen below:
They say that it is an IPS LCD with and not AMOLED and roughly translated, the reason is:
The question thus arises: why Apple used the IPS and not so popular AMOLED? The reason will probably be decent features IPS (good viewing angles, and others that familiar with the case), and very likely also hassle-volume production. It is not no secret that the current capacity in the OLED display is fully booked, and Apple would hardly find a manufacturer able to deliver in a short time, millions of pieces of displays produced by this technology. With IPS orders probably will not be a problem and also made this screen does not suffer from problems with line art as PenTile AMOLED display …
