Three minutes with the iPad

Site default logo image

I took a quick video with the iPad today. I know the iPad is getting a little bad press from some sites. But let’s just remember this is a $499 netbook replacement that also does a lot of really cool things that nothing currently in the market can do. More to come…

This might be the Apple tablet

Site default logo image

Engadget got their hands on a set of picts that look very Apple-y.   Though they are bolted down to a table, the tablet devices appear to be running very iPhone-like applications.  That is a lot of pixels there, no? Have a look and tell us what you think.  Another image below.

Some observations:

  • It looks to be running a Google earth type of app.
  • They do look like big iPhones.
  • There is no 3G signals – so they are probably on AT&T.

REAL Apple tablet picture leaked?

Well look what we have here…Engadget seems to have found some pictures of what appears to be “the tablet” browsing a new and improved Maps application.  The device appears to come complete with a home button on the bottom.  Looking in the top left corner, you can see “No Service”, which would tell us that this thing will in fact have 3G connectivity of some sort.

Notes on the Maps application: the “Locate Me” button and Bookmarks buttons have been relocated to the top of the screen next to the search bar.  Also, on the far right, you can see the end of the word “Directions”.  We’ve seen A LOT of supposed tablet pictures, but this one, this one seems pretty legit from the looks of it.

Engadget goes on to state that one of their sources (not connected with the pictures) says that “the tablet” still called “K48” by Apple employees will sell for $800 on contract with Verizon and $1000 unlocked.  Furthermore, this particular source says that there will be NO Macbook news tomorrow.

Apple to rename iPhone OS (and iPod touch OS) to iOS?

Site default logo image

Update: This is looking a little faker – we’re moving it off the front page.

According to MDN, Apple is going to rename their mobile OS to ‘iOS’ and this would conceivably include the tablet’s OS as well.  They show a questionable video that may or may not be real below that might be some of the marketing materials.  The move would make sense as Apple will have (at least) three different devices with the OS running on it.  We don’t mind that name either.

As a commenter below reminds us, Cisco’s router OS is called iOS which would complicate things. But, let’s remember that Cisco also held the iPhone trademark as well.

A new way to experience the keynote, coming tomorrow

I’m not going to tip our hand here but stop by (and tell your friends to as well!) for the tablet announcement coverage.  Just about everybody is going to do liveblogs or twitter updates.

We’re going to do something different.

(You’ll know exactly what’s being said within seconds of it coming out of Steve’s mouth.)

Any chance Jobs lets this one fly?

He says: “Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now is we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you’re going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific.”

What's it like to work for Apple at a big event?

Site default logo image

Here’s a little interview with former Apple Senior Systems Engineer Edward Eigerman on what it is like to work at Apple and go to an Apple event without knowledge of what your own company is about to do.

Interesting perspective to say the least (Bloomberg lady compares to terrorist org!?).  Eigerman now works as a technology consultant in the New York area. He is principal of Eigerman Consulting, Inc.

Apple pushing for $1 TV shows, networks reluctant…

Site default logo image

Apple is reported to be attempting to secure a better deal for iTunes-using TV show customers, pushing for lower prices from TV networks.

The Financial Times reports the company to be pushing for shows to cost $1 – half the current cost.

Apple is trying to convince networks that lowering prices would increase sales, thereby making up for any loss in revenue they’d see from the cut. Networks are resisting this attempt – despite DVD prices being considerably lower, for the most part.

The iTunes store delivered a record breaking quarter with strong sales of music, video and apps., execs confirmed last night. The App Store has seen more than 3 billion downloads to date in 77 countries.
