Need to Re-Jailbreak: 3G FaceTime is a go [Updated]

Site default logo image

I went on record on Twitter that I unjailbroke yesterday, and the only reason I would re-jailbreak would be for 3G FaceTime; I guess the time has come. A jailbreak-only app, My3G, has just been updated to support the FaceTime feature. My3G takes your 3G connection and coverts it so the iPhone thinks it’s WiFi.

To get the app you must download “Rock” from Cydia, then download My3G from Rock. The catch is the Rock version will cost you $3.99. The app is also now available directly in Cydia for $2.79 via the ModMyi repo. The app is identical, the price is the only difference; which one will you get?

Update: You can check out 3G FaceTime on video here and see how much data is actually used here.

Apple, Foxconn secret factory for Verizon iPhone?

Site default logo image

Apple and Foxconn are manufacturing iPhones in a small factory far away from the main plant using a relatively small team of 500 workers. Perhaps this is business as usual, but we all know Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs likes to design new products using small, top secret teams. Is this the future Verizon iPhone, or are the partners developing an all-new iPhone model?

Posh hotels offer iPad newspapers while publishers demand in-app subscriptions…

Site default logo image

Yet more evidence iPad is a more than just a netbook-killer — it is also expanding what computing devices can be used for. Last week we spoke about a posh NYC restaurant which now offers its wine lists using an iPad, now we learn international hotel chain, Sofitel, is offering iPads pre-populated with newspapers to some of its guests.

Meanwhile, publishing industry magnates are furious with Apple because it won’t yet allow them to charge subscription fees from within their apps. However, it is thought that while the publishers seek to keep all the cash from subs sales, AAPL wants its 30 percent. I anticipate a deal will be reached.

Back to Sofitel, and guests staying in high class suites in Paris, London (above), Munich and Brussels get lent iPads during their stay. They can use these to “choose from a selection of six newspapers and magazines for each of the six selected countries: the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the US,” reports Travolution.

Sofitel will in future expand the iPad news service across its worldwide network of 130 properties.

JailbreakMe FaceTime and MMS fix out, Unlock available in 48 hours

Site default logo image

Earlier we reported the JailbreakMe’s jailbreak system breaks the FaceTime and MMS features on many user’s devices. Since then, the Dev-Team has worked closely with the creator of Cydia, Jay Freeman aka Saurik, to issue a fix. New JailbreakMe users should simply proceed normally and a new version of the jailbreak will be installed that will not remove FaceTime or MMS from the iPhone.

Users who already installed JailbreakMe get an easy fix as well. They should simply navigate to Cydia and upgrade to the latest software. Additionally, PlanetBeing announced on his Twitter profile that a compatible unlock will be available in 48 hours. They are reportedly amidst internal testing of the unlock software.

Feel free to ask some questions in the comments. And yes, FaceTime still works.

Update: We’ve been told by Chronic Dev-Team that FaceTime and MMS may not work properly on some devices. To fix, do a fresh restore and re-jailbreak — that may do the trick. Let us know.

Update 2x: We’ve installed the jailbreak on 4 iPhone 4s and both FaceTime and MMS still work flawlessly on all devices.

Update 3x: One of our devices lost FaceTime and MMS after restarting.

Update 4x: An official fix for the FaceTime and MMS issues is now available, and a compatible carrier unlock will reportedly become available in 48 hours.

iOS Jailbreak via Mobile Safari is here

Site default logo image

The iPhone Dev Team (Comex) has just unleashed a new jailbreak tool for all iOS devices and it’s done through Mobile Safari! Head to www.jailbreakme.com from Safari on your iDevice and get going! This is the “JailBreakMe 2.0 star” jailbreak for this into all the codewords.

The servers are definitely stumped right now so try www.jailbreakme.modmyi.com — that worked for us.

We can verify that this jailbreak is meant to run on all iOS devices including iPad and iPhone 4 with iOS 4.0 and 4.01. It will not work on iOS devices running iOS 4.1 beta.

Update: We’ve got video on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G!

iPhone sees biggest Web market share gain ever in July

Site default logo image

Some good news from the folks at NetApplications for Apple.  It turns out that the iPhone gained significant market share in July.

  • iPhone posted its largest single-month usage gain ever in July. “What antenna problems?!”
  • Global usage share jumped from .59% to June to .7% in July. (In comparison, the May to June share was essentially flat)
  • The iPhone grew usage share at over twice the pace of Android.

Ruh Roh! Rival smartphone antenna performance videos vanish from Apple.com

Site default logo image

Yeah… not really much to say, except that Apple’s videos about their competitors antenna performance have seemed to pull a Criss Angel, and disappear from the company’s website. It probably has to do with their unhappy rivals or maybe they want to pull Antennagate back into the spotlight for another round of press.

You can still try to find a glimpse of the videos at their official YouTube channel here

The magnet touch – essential kitchen iPad accessory…

Site default logo image

Got to love this and do hope the UK design company sell a boatload of these to the millions of iPad buyers out there — introducing the FridgePad from Woodford Design.

In their own words, “The FridgePad magnetically mounts your iPad to your kitchen fridge so it’s at the heart of your home and in a perfect location for all the family to use.

“The FridgePad can be used in landscape or portrait mode, allows the iPad to be simply clipped in and out for fast access and provides a great safe and secure place to store your iPad.

“The FridgePad is an accessory to make the iPad work better for you. This really is one of those products that once you have tried it you’ll love it.”

We also like that the company appears committed to good quality product design, where it writes, “Woodford Design wanted to take iPad accessories to the next level of quality, so the FridgePad is more than just a fridge magnet. It has been cast and machined out of a solid chunk of high quality aluminium and will be offered in a luxurious silver finish./”

War report: UK army gets iPad for artillery

Site default logo image

We mentioned just last week the new generation of “defense” related iOS apps, now we get news that “UK soldiers use iPad app to train for Afghan operations”.

That’s right, UK troops are using an iPad and an app to learn how to handle a fire mission, the BBC explains.

It helps boost learning of technical jargon and procedures, apparently and is being described as part of an attempt to harness “smartphone and tablet technology … to speed up training across the army.”

Major Rich Gill is an army training officer involved in rolling out the app.

He said: “If we can use this sort of technology, we can probably shorten the amount of training and that is pretty key nowadays when people are so committed to operations in Afghanistan.
Army iPad app Soldiers at the Wiltshire base say the iPad app has made training fun

“There’s so much they need to do before they go there and when they come back.

“If we can use this to reduce the amount of training it’ll be fantastic.”

French carrier SFR warn users that iOS4 'significantly slows down' older iPhones?

Site default logo image

iPhone headaches continue, this time French carrier, SFR, is warning iPhone 3G users that iOS 4 significantly slows down their device, while Apple promises to fix the speed flaw and potential fixes emerges from out of the chatter.

SFR Info: updating of the iPhone 3G to software slows significantly iOS 4 navigation menus. Any update is irreversible.
This information concerns only the iPhone 3G and not the iPhone 3G.

In brief: story is that 3G and 3GS iPhone owners have seen their device speed slow considerably on upgrading to iOS 4. Apple is preparing a patch for this...

Various tip sites say to clean out the Spotlight options, but according to our commentors, that doesn’t work so well.  Others have had luck with Hard Resets every few days.

Steve's worst nightmare: iPhone 4 is being used to make porn?

Site default logo image

This one might hurt El Jobso more than Antennagate!  According to the AP,

When Apple Inc. launched the iPhone 4 and its FaceTime videoconference feature, it didn’t take long for adult-entertainment companies to develop video-sex chat services and start hiring workers through Craigslist.

With more than 3 million of the phones already sold, the adult industry stands to make big money on this new way to reach out and touch someone

Google search gets fully blocked in China [Update]

Site default logo image

The Associated Press is reporting that Google search today is completely blocked in Mainland China. Google is reportedly “still trying to gather information about the situation in China.” For those wondering, Gmail is still kicking it but all things search are currently blocked except images are partially blocked.

Update: Google says this issue is just a glitch. False alarm, folks.

FCC reveals Sprint Peel. 3G case for iPod touch?

Site default logo image

Sprint really has a thing for Apple lately, though the feelings unfortunately don’t quite seem to be mutual.  The FCC (via PhoneScoop) reveals a new product that, though it doesn’t mention it by name, seems like it would fit snuggly around our favorite music players.

Heck, it might even fit around an iPhone in an AT&T dead zone…and the more cases, the merrier.  It appears it doesn’t charge the iPod but it also doesn’t draw power either, it charges with a Mini USB connector (shown)

Apple as religion?

Site default logo image

Foxnews this morning has a doozy:

In a research paper published this month by two professors at Texas A&M University, the authors argue that the only way to understand the slavish adoration and over-the top financial success of Apple and its “Jesus Phone” (the iPhone) is to understand its minimalist, white-walled stores as the new churches of the tech generation.

um. yeah?

Has nothing to do with the products actually working really well?  Is making good products that hard to understand?

Meet new $139 Amazon Kindle

Site default logo image

Amazon has just announced their brand new Kindle, and it’s just called the Kindle. It’s 21% smaller, 15% lighter, 20% faster and still boasts that black and white e-ink display we all know and love. Amazon’s getting really colorful here adding a graphite-colored model to the mix; the classic white from past generations still stands strong.

The new eBook reading device maxes out at 4 GB of storage, and keeps the 6 inch display. The Kindle comes in two configurations, a WiFi-only model for $139 and version for $189 that rocks AT&T’s 3G network. The most incredible part is the insane battery life which provides a month of usage sans and 10 days with the wireless.

The new Kindle also is getting an “experimental” web browser. Now you can browse on that 6 inch e-ink display; take that Apple! The controls and keyboard are also reportedly improved and hey… it’s a physical keyboard.
