Wow, this is a hilarious attack on Apple’s wireless provider, AT&T. If they can get through, AT&T are probably on the phone with their lawyers right now.

Worm hits Jailbroken iPhones (and iPod Touches) with SSH enabled + no default password change

Site default logo image

If you’ve jailbroken your iPhone and enabled SSH, change your default password!

Reports from Sophos indicate that another hack is spreading that uses this obvious vulnerability to Rick Roll Jailbreakers with the wallpaper pictured below.  Sophos, being a security vendor, states the obvious: If you leave your iPhone open like this, literally everything in it including email and bank passwords are vulnerable.  This one is currently circulating around Australia but nothing is preventing it from spreading overseas.

Jailbreakers who’ve been hacked will see the wallpaper (above) with the phrase “ikee [the name of the hacker] is never going to give you up” at the top. Best to do a restore at this point and change your password if you are going to jailbreak!

Instructions on changing your iPhone’s default password below

How to change your iPhone root password:

Radio Shack to carry iPhone, Target to follow?

Site default logo image

The Wall St. Journal is reporting that Radio Shack will begin selling the iPhone for the holidays in New York City and Dallas-Ft. Worth and will roll it out to all of its stores in 2010.  Seperately, Radio Shack will be operating Target’s wireless phone business or “store-within a store” so it is conceivable that they’ll sell the iPhones at Target as well

“The Shack” has been rumored to carry the iPhone for over a year.

iPhone developers still stealing phone numbers

Site default logo image

If you have any of the iPhone games above, iPhone developer Storm 8 might have collected your iPhone number according to a lawsuit investigated by Boing Boing.

…the suit claims that the practice is not authorized by Apple and involves the execution of “malicious software code”.  Storm8 has written the software for all its games in such a way that it automatically accesses, collects, and transmits the wireless telephone number of each iPhone user who downloads any Storm8 game,” the suit alleges. ” … Storm8, though, has no reason whatsoever to access the wireless phone numbers of the iPhones on which its games are installed.”…The number farming was not disclosed to players until an acknowledgement in August that described it as a “bug.” The lawsuit claims that only “very specific and specialized software code” could do so, however, and seeks injunctive relief and damages.

This follows news earlier this year that Mogo, a Swiss developer was stealing numbers, and calling their free customers to update to their paid app.

Pogue on "App Phone" Droid: Toss up vs. iPhone

Site default logo image

A couple of points to note:

  • AT&T’s poor network is really killing the iPhone’s popularity and Pogue points this out.  As someone frequently in NYC, the iPhone is useless as a phone here.   I know many people who have an iPhone and still need to use a Verizon phone for phone calls.  The Droid will be tempting to them.  I’ve had similar experiences in SF.
  • The Droid OS/apps are way less polished than the iPhone’s.  While it isn’t getting a lot of airtime, I think this is akin to Windows vs. Mac.  To many people, this won’t matter. The Droid is definitely a techie phone.  Everything from the name to the feature-set is for techies.  Most people who’ve played with it so far are techie/journalists (like Pogue).  It will be interesting to see what everyday smartphone users think.
  • Those docks are pretty cool but not a technology breakthrough.  Apple should allow docks to communicate with the OS so that Belkin can create a $20 car dock and nightstand dock.  OS 3.2?
  • Not a fan of “App Phone”

Appsfire figures that most Apps aren't very successful

Site default logo image

With the App Store now holding over 100,000 apps, one would figure that only a few would enjoy the type of success that the big guys get.  Appsfire’s agrees and has some actual numbers on what happens along the looooong tail:

  • Only 5 applications are on half of all iPhones/iPod Touch devices (FaceBook, AIM, Google?)
  • The 1000th ranked app, which is the top 1%, is installed on “only” 1.76% of iPhones/ iPod touches.  If there are 50 million devices out there, that is almost a million installations so that is still significant.
  • After 20,000, the apps have almost no installations. Meaning 80% of apps never get any sort of popularity.

AT&T sues Verizon over "There's a Map for That" campaign

Site default logo image

AT&T is suing Verizon because it believes the “There’s a Map for That” advertising is misleading.  AT&T contend that the maps shown confuse the customer into believing there is no coverage at all in the white spots on AT&T’s map when in fact there is either EDGE or GPRS service in a lot of those areas.

Maybe those attorney fees would be better spent on adding towers/capacity and working on that map, AT&T?

CNET.uk says the iPhone is the "Worst Phone EVAR"

Site default logo image

Even though it is the highest rated mobile phone on their own site, they say, as a phone, it is the worst.  They cite poor mic and speakers, dropped or unreachable calls a a host of other issues.

It may be the highest-rated mobile phone on CNET UK, rocking the pockets of half of our crack editorial team. It’s certainly the touchscreen face that launched a thousand apps. But as an actual call-making phone, it’s rubbish, and we aim to prove it.

Strange because we don’t have iPhone connectivity issues over here in the US?
