Apple Watch survives remarkably well in kitchen torture test until…

The Apple Watch Sport’s Ion X glass has been put through a torture scratch test and we’ve seen it survive 15 minutes under water but now that Apple Watches are being shipped en masse, we’re going to see many full-on torture tests.  The first such test is from Cnet which takes it through some (admittedly unlikely) kitchen destruction scenarios.

The Apple Watch and its white band survived admirably through the gauntlet but you could tell this video was going to end with a broken watch and it finally broke when smashed with a iron skillet. OK, sure. Broken-apple-watch-shattered-gass

I don’t know about you guys but this test gives me a lot of confidence in the Apple Watch, particularly the drops, band stain resistance and waterproofing. Even this broken glass might be easily repairable as shown by iFixit yesterday.

Would anybody do this to a regular watch? I have never cracked the glass on a regular watch so why would this be any difference. This is just silly.

They do this for the money. Each visitor view and clicks can be monetized through advertising.

The Who and Hendrix did this with guitars: bend gate and flamability tests were spearheaded by those chaps. How we forget.

It can’t even survive cast iron??? What the hell am I paying for then? I’m canceling my entry level Sport order! I’m going to flush my last generation Shuffle down the toilet and switch to Android when my 5C contract is over. The stock is going to fall all the way to zero now, Apple is doooooooooooooooomed!!!1

Also, you’re going to get a lot of milage out of that Aluminum Oxide tag, lol.

Am i the only one that is a little disgusted with all the various apple watch destruction videos on launch day? All these poor watches being bought and used just for the destruction and enjoyment of the “news” sites writing about their torturing of these watches. I wonder how many more people would be able to enjoy their watches sooner if it wasn’t for these sites gobbling them up on launch day. Is there really a source of pride being able to say we’re the first to take a blender the the new watch. We all know what happens when you smash your watch with a skillet. Its called Common Sense. lol

The number of a few hundred sites that do videos like these is a rather small number when the considering the whole initial shipping numbers.
I also don’t like seeing items that have their worth getting destroyed but in my opinion it’s ok this time because it’s a completely new product.

    • To respectfully disagree…

We now know that you can put your watch underwater for 10 minutes, and should you drop it into boiling water, we know that it will power off, which is a great feature (don’t want runaway Lithion Ion battery failure…) and that should you drop it, it will not break, and, for some reason, it drops off on the stairs at a subway station, the people stepping on it won’t break it.

As for the skillet test, I get it, but I’l like to see the bottom of that pan, and where it impacted. The damage is where I expected, because the point of impact was at that edge, and not distributed over the entire face of the watch.

Lastly, these pseudo-scientific tests are what we need. The impact in a lab test is great for getting the strength of the glass and individual components, but say, for the heat test… what if you’re outdoors and the watch is in direct sunlight in Phoenix, and it’s 120 degrees outside, in a car on the dashboard, and there is greenhouse heating in the watch and car, and it gets to 200 degrees inside the watch? Well, we know that it will shut down until it cools off.

Apple does do this kind of testing, but having it out in the wild with these types of tests and video of them actually increases my faith in Apple.

As far as the destructo-tests and people in line. If what is being rumored is true, and there are, say 20 of these videos and 2 million watches in the wild, that’s 0.0001% of the watches out there. Even if 200,000 shipped on day 1, that’s 0.01%. Plus, it’s their watch, and they can do as they choose with them. If destroying them is what they want to do, fine by me. I’m kind of a “freedom” guy, and if what you do offends me, I won’t do it, but I’m not going to tell you not to do it, to make me happy.

Lastly, the video was helped by the cute girl in it. :D

I think this is an  Watch Sport, so no sapphire screen, or am I wrong?

    • Matthew Judy - 9 years ago

That’s correct; it’s Ion-X Glass, not sapphire. Supposedly, the glass is supposed to actually be better at handling impact, but my gut tells me that the sapphire would have held up better in that particular test.

      • Sapphire would not have done better with the skillet because it not as flexible as mineral glass (Ion-X). What was surprising to me was the scratch resistant of Ion-X, Sapphire will hold much much better.

IMO – C/Net is nothing but a whore for clicks site! The purveyor of this damage was nothing but annoying and I totally agree with Standardpull – it’s all about the $$$$ the clicks pull in.

C/Net was good for hosting free download utilities – until they started putting there “ads and spam” into the download stream, without telling you, and all of a sudden you ended up with a different search engine, home page or unwanted spam / malware.

I put C/Net in the 12th ring of Hell. They are like hemorrhoids – serve no useful purpose, are a pain in the a$$ and hang out around a$$holes .

Other than your cute pink shoes, this was truly painful to watch

my sport scratched within 8 hours of wearing it from simply putting my wrist on the ground while i was laying down on the ground in savasna in yoga. 2 scratches, not deep but extremely noticeable in the sun and different lights.

I am in the military. What I want to know is if it will survive a point blank 7.62mm caliber round. If so, I’ll buy one!

do not know what the video is about… she is hot.

My thoughts about the video? Selfish! While many people are waiting for their orders to be delivered. We find these silly people destroying devices on video. What is the purpose? I buy many expensive watches and I do not mistreat my watches like this. I want the lady to do this to her louboutin red bottoms… she would catch an instant heart attack
