Apple officially announces 7.9-inch iPad mini 3 with Touch ID & gold option

In addition to the new iPad Air 2, Apple today officially unveiled the follow up to the iPad mini with Retina display, the “iPad mini 3”.

As we reported yesterday, Apple leaked the new name of the third-generation 7.9-inch iPad through its iOS 8 user guide. The iPad mini 3 has gained the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. The 7.9-inch iPad will also be available in gold for the first time. This year Apple saved the major internal changes in the iPad lineup for the 9.7-inch iPad with the new iPad Air 2.

  1. It should be mention that the ipad mini 3 and the ipad mini 2 have the same A7 chip with 64‑bit architecture and M7 motion coprocessor and was not upgraded to the A8X chip with 64‑bit architecture and M8 motion coprocessor. This was listed under the Compare iPad models on the Apple page. Only upgrade was the Fingerprint identity sensor.

$110 price difference on the base model for Touch ID and a change in number (from #2 to #3)? No thanks. I was holding off buying a mini – looks like I’ll save some money and buy a 32GB #2

  2. Apple should be ashamed of themselves for not adding at the least an A8 chip to the iPad mini 3, it’s a real disappointment… But hey, I’ll gladly take one without Touch ID or a gold option for $100 off no problem!
