Apple’s CarPlay feature continues to pop up in more new cars this year including several new models with Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect 4.0 infotainment system. The latest cars to offer CarPlay include the 2017 model Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, and Dodge Charger.
Fiat Chrysler’s CarPlay implementation looks a bit different from a lot of other versions of CarPlay.
Rather than allowing CarPlay to completely take over the on-screen experience, Fiat Chrysler positions the CarPlay interface between its own climate control interface and infotainment controls. It’s a bit busier-looking than traditional CarPlay, but puts more controls on-screen at the same time.
Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect 4.0 screens are also pretty big at 8.4-inches, but again sharing the display with non-CarPlay elements brings down the effective size. The same system also supports Android Auto for non-iPhone users.
Just yesterday we reported that BMW is now offering options for CarPlay in almost all of its models as a $300 upgrade. Ford also recently came on board with CarPlay as an available option on its new models. Apple maintains a list of new cars with CarPlay availability, and Sony recently unveiled an upcoming aftermarket display that will offer CarPlay.
Later this month, CarPlay is set to improve with new features in iOS 10 including VoIP support for apps like Skype, the ability to rearrange and remove icons, changes to Apple Music, and support for in-dash instrument clusters.
