Apple warns new glossy Jet Black iPhone 7 finish will scratch easily, recommends using case

Apple is warning customers that its new “Jet Black” iPhone 7 might scratch easier than other models.

Apple today announced its all-new iPhone 7 lineup, and with it introduced two new black finishes— a glossy piano black finish dubbed “Jet Black” and a charcoal black color more like the old Space Gray option that it’s simply calling “Black”.

The new shiny jet black finish seems to be getting the most attention as it’s the most striking visual change for the new phone, but Apple is also warning that the new finish will show scratches easier.

Hidden in the fine print of the tech specs page for iPhone 7 is the following warning:

The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.

So the jet black iPhone 7 will still be as hard as the other iPhones and likely as durable, but it seems scratching was enough of an issue in Apple’s own tests that it thought of putting the warning for those considering the model.

Here’s a comparison of the new colors including the glossy jet black and black models:

The new jet black model is the only variation of the new iPhone that is limited to 128GB and 256GB capacities, while other color options— silver, black, gold, and rose gold— will be available in 32GB as well.
