Dolby Atmos audio support on Apple TV is one of the headlining features of the upcoming tvOS software update, but support during the beta cycle has been limited so far. Now as Apple readies tvOS 12 for release likely next month, several titles on iTunes Movies are being upgraded to work with the immersive audio feature.
When tvOS 12 is released for Apple TV later this year, Apple will upgrade compatible movies purchased from iTunes with Dolby Atmos support for free when using Dolby Atmos speakers.
Apple used this same strategy when upgrading iTunes Movies for 4K and HDR. tvOS 12 will also make Apple TV 4K the only streaming box to work with both Dolby Vision high dynamic range picture quality and Dolby Atmos immersive sound.
Dolby Atmos support for iTunes Movies has been sporadic over the summer, but as of this week the immersive audio format is much more prevalent — without using the VUDU app as a workaround.
Both purchased titles and listings on the iTunes Movies Store now denote Dolby Atmos support where available. Dolby Atmos titles include Baby Driver, Blade Runner 2049, Deadpool 2, Justice League, Peter Rabbit, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Suicide Squad, and many more.
A quick Siri search for “Show me movies with Dolby Atmos” responds with a listing of movies that Siri says “will sound great in Dolby Atmos” as well, although you’ll need to open each title in iTunes Movies and not other apps to use Dolby Atmos compatibility.
Dolby Atmos will work with Apple TV 4K and Dolby Atmos compatible speakers and receivers.
