New USB-C Magic Mouse still has the charging port on the bottom

There are a lot of memes on the internet about Apple’s Magic Mouse as users have to turn it upside down to plug it into the charger. But if you thought Apple would change that with the new Magic Mouse launched today, we have some bad news. Although it now has USB-C, the charging port is still on the bottom of the mouse.

Along with the new M4 iMac, Apple announced on Monday new versions of its “Magic” accessories for the Mac, including a new Magic Mouse, Keyboard and Trackpad. As we predicted, the new versions are pretty much identical to the previous ones, except that they now feature a USB-C charging port instead of Lightning.

But what about one of the most criticized aspects of Magic Mouse? Although Apple’s marketing images don’t show the new mouse from a lot of angles, the 3D file used to preview the new iMac in augmented reality confirms that the Magic Mouse’s charging port is still on the bottom.

The first Magic Mouse was introduced in 2009 and stood out for its multi-touch surface. At the time, the mouse was powered by removable batteries, so users could simply swap out the batteries and keep using the mouse. In 2015, Apple launched Magic Mouse 2 with the same design, but now with an internal rechargeable battery.

The Lightning port for recharging was placed on the bottom of the mouse, which resulted in a lot of criticism from users. There’s no way to use the Magic Mouse 2 while it’s charging. Although many argue that recharging the mouse only takes a few minutes, this time can be critical when the battery runs out during work.

Over the years, many people have come up with different solutions for the Magic Mouse design, including cases with the port on the side or with Qi charger support. The problem is, Apple blocks Magic Mouse from working when it’s receiving power. This is not the case with the Magic Keyboard or Trackpad, which can be used while charging.

Apple is selling the new USB-C Magic Mouse for $79 on its website, and there’s a black version for $99 (even though they have the same hardware). The company doesn’t sell the versions in color, which are shipped with the iMac, separately. You can still buy the Lightning version at a discount on Amazon.
