It turns out that Apple’s outgoing CFO Luca Maestri won’t be the next CEO of car maker Stellantis — which was apparently a rumor in the automotive industry.
Our first reaction? It’s always fun to learn about the rumor from the denial. Something similar happened two years ago when Bob Iger returned to Disney and noped rumors that the firm would merge with Apple.
Anyway, the rumor is sourced to a report in an Italian newspaper. Reporting that Apple’s retiring chief financial officer could be tapped to lead Stellantis prompted a spokesperson for the car company to say on the record that “it is not true.”
Reuters adds that a source familiar with the matter called the report “fake news,” while another source added more color:
A second source close to the matter told Reuters that a CEO from the tech sector may be a possibility at Stellantis, noting however that given his role at Apple, Maestri has more of a financial than tech profile.
Ah, yes, the classic Maestri is a money guy from a tech company and not exactly a tech guy excuse. Math checks out.
Maestri’s retirement from Apple was announced in August, although the CFO transition was planned for the new year. Kevan Parekh, a deputy to Maestri, will take over for the 61-year-old who spent a decade in the role.
