CarPlay 2 custom widgets UI revealed as Apple continues development

CarPlay’s major next generation still isn’t here yet, despite Apple’s website currently saying that the first models would arrive in 2024. But now, a widget interface for CarPlay 2 has leaked in new images and given a glimpse into Apple’s ongoing development.

Leaked CarPlay 2 images show familiar Apple widget interface

Today in a post on X, Aaron Perris shared his recent discovery of the CarPlay 2 widget interface. He published four images in total.

The leaked images were found in an EU database, exactly where we’ve seen CarPlay 2 assets published previously.

Widgets shown include:

  • Clock widget for showing a city’s time
  • Weather widget for the Forecast
  • Calendar widget to highlight your next event
  • Navigation & Now Playing combo widget
  • plus a standalone Now Playing widget

As seen below, CarPlay 2 also features the familiar column of apps along the left edge of the screen, just like the existing CarPlay interface.

9to5Mac’s Take

This CarPlay 2 interface looks an awful lot like the standard widgets UI available now across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Which is great, since it’s a familiar system to Apple users.

However, the familiarity does call into question why custom widgets like this can’t come to the existing version of CarPlay. As CarPlay 2 continues to be MIA, I’ve seen many users start to question whether Apple could simply focus its efforts on making the existing system better than ever.
