Photoshop launches on iPhone as new app packed with free features

Photoshop is launching on iPhone today, a big move for Adobe as it seeks to offer its powerful photo editing suite in a mobile-friendly form. Here are the details.

New iPhone app brings powerful Photoshop features to mobile

Photoshop’s iPhone debut arrives as a brand new app that offers a lot of functionality for free.

From the company’s press release, free features include the following:

  • Create unique images and designs by combining, compositing and blending images with core Photoshop tools and features, including selections, layers and masks
  • Remove, recolor or replace parts of an image with the intuitive Tap Select tool
  • Utilize advanced removal tools like the Spot Healing Brush to brush away distractions in seconds
  • Leverage powerful generative AI tools powered by Adobe Firefly including the popular Generative Fill and Generative Expand to easily add new elements to designs and quickly edit photos
  • Navigate across workflows easily with direct integration with creative apps including Adobe Express, Adobe Fresco and Adobe Lightroom
  • Add, replace and create with a vast library of hundreds of thousands of free Adobe Stock assets

Whether you have prior experience with Photoshop or not, Adobe’s hope is that the new iPhone app offers a user-friendly, mobile-optimized way to tap into Photoshop’s capabilities.

Advanced features available for Adobe subscribers

Although the app does offer a lot for free, if you’re a paying Adobe subscriber you will also get more advanced features thrown into the iPhone app at no extra cost.

These premium features include access to advanced tools like Photoshop’s Remove Tool, Clone Stamp, and Content-Aware Fill, plus the Magic Wand, Object Select, Lighten and Darken. A subscription plan will unlock more than 20,000 fonts in the iPhone app too.

For anyone not already paying for Photoshop, Adobe is launching a new Photoshop Mobile and Web plan for $7.99/month or $69.99/year. It unlocks all premium features in the iPhone app plus in the upgraded web interface, which also launches today. But again, if you’re already on an Adobe Photoshop subscription, all the advanced features in the iPhone app are automatically unlocked.

It’s been over five years since Photoshop launched on iPad, so it’s nice to see Apple’s biggest platform, the iPhone, now supported too with its own mobile app.

If you’re interested in using Photoshop on Android, that app will arrive “later this year,” but for now Photoshop Mobile is iPhone only.
