Apple highlights Apple Intelligence ‘Clean Up’ feature in new ad [Video]

While Apple has delayed some of the most ambitious Apple Intelligence features, the company isn’t shying away from promoting the ones that have shipped to iPhone users. In a new ad that debuted today, Apple promotes the “Clean Up” feature in the Photos app.

The Clean Up feature in Photos lets you identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo, without accidentally altering the subject of the image.

In today’s ad, Apple uses the Clean Up feature to remove a reflection of the person taking an image from a mirror behind the subject. It works with just a single tap. “With Apple Intelligence, you can now remove distracting objects from your photos with the Clean Up tool,” Apple touts.

Thus far, Clean Up is the only Apple Intelligence feature that I've had any use for--and it actually worked pretty well. I was tasked with assembling a photo slideshow for a relative's visitation. A number of 70-80 year old photos that I scanned had significant damage, and Clean Up was able to correct/mitigate a fair amount of that. It wasn't perfect, and there were certainly areas of damage that it couldn't figure out, but with a few clicks and drags and a minute or two on each picture it improved them to within 90% of normal, let's say. For something being shown on a rando flat-screen TV at a funeral home, they were much improved and looked good. It saved me far more time spent in Photoshop--time that I ended up needing to fight bugs in the Photos app that cause key-frame glitching issues in exported-to-video slideshows. But I digress...

Here are the hardware requirements to use Clean Up:

  • iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max; any iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later; Mac with M1 or later
  • iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1

While we can (and should) criticize Apple for advertising certain Apple Intelligence features before they were available, Clean Up is a useful feature that is available today for iPhone users.
