New iPhone will upgrade camera to 200MP, up from 48MP per leaker

It was only in the last few years that Apple started shifting its iPhone cameras to 48MP, but it seems another big leap is in the works. Per a new leak, Apple is working on bumping the camera to 200MP on a future iPhone model.

iPhone camera expected to jump from 48MP to 200MP sensor

Every year Apple releases new iPhones. And every year, one upgrade you can count on is camera changes.

The camera has long been one of iPhone’s most important features, and Apple’s hardware efforts reflect that.

New camera improvements are expected for this year’s iPhone 17 line, such as an upgraded 24MP front-facing camera, new 48MP telephoto on the Pro models, and more.

But per Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, a bigger leap is on the way with a future iPhone model.

In a new post, it’s been revealed that Apple is working on a 200MP camera upgrade for the iPhone.

There’s no specific model mentioned, so it’s unknown when the camera change might arrive.

If it’s next year, perhaps the new iPhone Fold is the target model since it will carry an ultra-premium price tag. If it won’t be until later, then 2027’s 20th anniversary iPhone Pro could be another good option.

Apple has for years been slower to introduce megapixel changes on the iPhone. The recent upgrade to 48MP came years after its competitors. And Samsung already ships its own 200MP cameras, debuting them two years ago on the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Increasing megapixels on a smartphone camera can lead to images that contain more noise, so we’ll have to see how Apple plans to mitigate such issues when its 200MP model arrives.
