iOS 19 could finally offer the battery feature I’ve always wanted

iOS 19 will be unveiled in less than two weeks, and there’s one rumored feature that could prove the sleeper hit of the release: a new battery charging indicator on the Lock Screen.

New Lock Screen indicator in iOS 19 will provide charging time estimate

The iPhone and iOS are nearly two decades old, so while Apple can always find new features and improvements to add, the low-hanging fruit is scarce.

Rumors indicate iOS 19 will be an exciting release for many reasons, chief among them the big new design and arrival of Siri’s delayed upgrades.

But there’s also a feature coming that I’ve wanted for as long as I can remember.

Per Mark Gurman:

There…will be a lock-screen indicator showing how long it will take to charge up [your iPhone]

One small sentence, but this new feature will undoubtedly make a huge difference.

iPhone users often have to, or choose to, charge their device during the day. Some people forget to charge overnight, or their use is heavy enough that they need midday boosts.

Even if you’re someone who mostly only charges at night—like me—I’m sure there are days that serve as exceptions.

Last week I was on vacation overseas, taking lots of photos and videos, cellular roaming, out and about with little time near a charger.

So you can bet that in the brief periods I was back at my hotel, I wanted to charge my iPhone to ensure it got me through the day with comfortable cushion.

Situations like this happen often. For one reason or another, you’re in a time crunch and want to charge your iPhone.

How long will it take to charge? You can make a guess, but never before has your iPhone provided that crucial information.

I can’t say I’m excited about it, but I do think it’ll be something I appreciate when I use it for the first time.

But with iOS 19, your estimated charging time will be right there on the Lock Screen.

I’d guess this will be a Live Activity, but perhaps Apple will make it a Lock Screen widget, or some other unique UI element.

In any case, nearly two decades after the iPhone launched, it sounds like with iOS 19 the device will finally let you know how long a charge will take.
