Apple TV+ just aired the finale for its crime thriller Smoke, and in a new interview, creator Dennis Lehane talks about hiding the shocking last twist from Apple, and the current status of season 2.

Smoke reunited creator Dennis Lehane and star Taron Egerton, who previously collaborated on the limited series Black Bird. That show remains one of the most critically acclaimed shows on Apple TV+.
Though the two series feel very different, Smoke is also a crime thriller, and even shares supporting actor Greg Kinnear—in addition to Egerton and Lehane.
Now, the entire 9-episode first season is fully available on Apple TV+.
Smoke is full of big twists, but one of its most significant reveals was saved for the finale. And per Dennis Lehane, that twist was even hidden from Apple for a while.
*spoilers ahead*
In the Smoke finale, Gudsen is at last apprehended and is being interrogated. During a pivotal scene, we learn that his physical appearance is not at all what’s been portrayed.
Here’s Lehane, speaking to Variety:
I remember the day I came in and said, “Dave is not Dave. Dave does not look like Taron Egerton.” It was pretty early, and we hid it from Apple because we knew they’d hate it — and they did. And everybody was like, “What?!” And I was like, “No, he’s projecting! That storyline is about his projection. He’s projecting who he is.”…This is a guy who walked around thinking of himself as a hero, who was simultaneously running out and doing some really terrible things.
The character of Dave Gudsen is inspired by a true-life arsonist, whose story is chronicled in the Firebug true crime podcast.
Despite some elements of the show being inspired by a true story, Lehane says he hopes to have the chance to continue the show beyond its first season.
Regarding a potential season 2:
We have plans if it were to go forward, but we don’t know if it will or won’t…If it goes someplace, we have a plan; we know where it can go. If it doesn’t, I’m moving on to the next thing. I did the show I wanted to do.
It sounds like Apple has not yet decided whether to renew Smoke for a second season or not. But the potential is there and a plan is in place if the series continues.
