Rumored F1 movie digital release date points to imminent launch ahead of Apple TV+ debut

A new rumor claims Apple’s F1 movie will be available to own digitally on Friday. However, there are two reasons to be skeptical.

The source of the rumor is the aptly named website When To Stream. It claims that F1 will come to PVOD, or premium video on demand, starting this Friday. Forbes notes that the website is “typically accurate for its PVOD reports,” but neither Apple nor Warner Bros. has announced a date.

Apple’s F1 movie is already out of the average 45 day window between the theatrical release date and PVOD release date, so the August 22 date isn’t unexpected.

However, the F1 movie has been the sleeper hit of the summer. Apple re-released it in IMAX on August 8 and other large format screens on August 15.

Still, it’s not unheard of for movies to be released on PVOD while still showing in some theaters.

In Apple’s case, though, there’s a hefty $600 million global theatrical revenue target they’re chasing. Releasing the movie for purchase at home gives moviegoers one less reason to throw money toward theatrical release revenue.

Separately, a Blu-ray forum points to a physical media release on October 7. Both the August 22 and October 7 dates are unofficial and unconfirmed.

Meanwhile, the bigger question on everyone’s mind is when the F1 movie will arrive for streaming on Apple TV+ subscribers. Our best guess still points to sometime in October.
