Apple today announced its next generation lineup of iPhone, starting with the entry-level iPhone 17. iPhone 17 features an upgraded display, better front and rear cameras, and more enhancements. All of these upgrades are offered at the same $799 starting price as the outgoing iPhone 16.
The new iPhone 17 has a larger 6.3-inch display, with ProMotion high-refresh rate support for the first time. It also supports always-on mode to show your lock screen in a dimmed state. The A19 CPU features a six-core design. GPU performance also sees an upgrade; Apple says it is 20% faster than the A18 chip in last-year’s iPhone 16.
The iPhone 17 display has also been upgraded with improved brightness up to 3,000 nits. A new anti-reflective coating also helps make the iPhone more readable in harsh indoor and outdoor lighting. A new Ceramic Shield 2 cover glass protects the phone from drops and dings.
When watching video, the efficiency of the ProMotion display helps to deliver up to 8 hours of video watching time on a single charge.
Regarding the camera system, Apple has revamped the front selfie camera with a new sensor that is about twice as large. Apple also says the sensor is optimized to take selfies in any orientation.
You can actually take a landscape selfie without having to physically rotate your device. When the phone detects other people in the frame, this aspect ratio change can happen automatically, with a feature that Apple brands as Center Stage.
On the rear of the phone, there are still two camera lenses. However, the ultra-wide lens has been upgraded with a new higher-resolution 48-megapixel sensor.
The iPhone 17 is available in five new colors, black, white, mist blue, sage and lavender. iPhone 17 starts at the same $799 price point, but now with 256 GB storage.
