At this point, it is not exactly a surprise, but it is still noteworthy: If you’re buying the new AirPods Pro 3, make sure you have a USB-C charging cable or a wireless charger handy. Here are the details.

As Apple succinctly explains on the AirPods Pro 3 tech specs page:
“USB‑C Charge Cable sold separately.“
While many users have more than enough charging alternatives at home, at work, and even in their cars, some might still be caught by surprise and may have to shell out a few extra dollars to be able to recharge their AirPods Pro 3 case.

Apple says the move is for environmental reasons, and that may be true.
Reducing the shipment of potentially-unnecessary cables is good for the environment...but it's notable how many of these "for the environment" decisions just so happen to also reduce Apple's production costs, while the price buyers pay remains the same. How convenient!
Where is Apple's environmental conscience when releasing very-slightly-different phones year after year, leading customers to buy all-new cases? Or withholding features like "dual capture video recording" from older iPhones that are absolutely capable of it?
Apple does a lot of things that are environmentally friendly, but this particular thing is just greenwashing what is really a cost-cutting measure.
Apple has increasingly stopped shipping cables and power bricks with new products, and the AirPods Pro 3 are the latest product to join that list.
Apple says the move is for environmental reasons, and that may be true. Still, the company is often sued over the change and, in some cases, is required by courts to give customers a cable or power brick at no cost.
