Report: iPhone 16 tops Q3 2025 sales as Apple claims 5 of the 10 best-selling spots

A new report from Counterpoint Research shows that Apple once again dominated global smartphone sales last quarter, with the iPhone 16 leading the pack. Here’s the breakdown.

Apple and Samsung dominate the ranking

According to the report, last quarter was the third consecutive quarter during which sales were led by the iPhone 16, which captured 4% of the total volume share.

Not only that, but Apple claimed five of the top 10 spots this quarter, an improvement over last year’s Q3, when the company secured four positions: #1 with the iPhone 15, #2 with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, #3 with the iPhone 15 Pro, and #8 with the iPhone 14.

This year, beyond the iPhone 16 taking the top spot, the iPhone 16 Pro ranked second, the iPhone 16 Pro Max third, the iPhone 16e fourth, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max rounded out Apple’s presence at #10, “despite limited availability towards the end of the quarter,” per the report.

Here’s yet another factor that contributed to Apple scoring five spots in the top 10 for the quarter, according to Counterpoint Research:

Thanks to a sales boost in India driven by festive promotions and sustained recovery in Japan, the iPhone 16 was able to restrict the iPhone 16 series’ seasonal decline due to the iPhone 17 series launch. The iPhone 16 Pro models, however, saw a steeper decline as the highest contributing markets, like the US, UK and China, saw more consumers opting for the iPhone 17 series over the predecessor.

Counterpoint also says that last semester’s sales were “pushed by COVID-era iPhone buyers looking for a smartphone replacement,” and that, for Samsung’s part, the “Galaxy A16 5G was the best-selling Android smartphone for the quarter.”

Looking ahead, Counterpoint says that AI features to keep lifting the mid-price segment in the top 10 ranking, and you can read more about the report here.
