WhatsApp launches three new features to upgrade group chats

WhatsApp has just announced its first new features of the year, with three upgrades launching for group chats. Here’s what’s new.

WhatsApp adds Member Tags, Text Stickers, and Event Reminders

Recently in iOS 26, Apple added a bunch of new features for Messages group chats.

Now today, WhatsApp has announced its own set of new group chat-focused additions.

Three new features rolling out starting today include:

  1. Member Tags
  2. Text Stickers
  3. Event Reminders

Here are the official descriptions from WhatsApp’s blog post:

Member Tags: “We all wear different hats and sometimes you want to give that more context in a group chat. Now you can give yourself a tag that tells the group what your role is, and can be customized for each group you’re in. So you can be “Anna’s Dad” in one group, and “Goalkeeper” in another.”

Text Stickers: “For the messages you want to really stand out, you can now turn any word into a sticker by typing your text into Sticker Search. You can also add newly created stickers directly to your sticker packs instead of having to send them in a chat first.”

Event Reminders: “Now when you create and send an event in your group chat you can set custom early reminders for your invitees. This helps everyone remember to commute to the party you’re hosting or hop on the call at the right time, depending on the event type.”

It’s unclear exactly which version of the WhatsApp iOS app is needed for these new features. Even though Member Tags were just announced today, the app’s release notes from a few weeks ago mention them. But it’s not unusual for WhatsApp to launch and announce new features on different timelines.
