Apple celebrates Martin Luther King Jr Day in annual homepage homage

In an annual tradition, Apple is celebrating Martin Luther King Jr Day on its homepage, with quotes from the civil rights champion.

This year’s featured quote is “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” …

The company notes this was taken from King’s sermon delivered at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1957. There are two further quotes on the page.

“I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world.”

“Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail. If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook has also tweeted a celebration of King’s legacy, with an additional quote.

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service, his commitment to justice, and his belief that every one of us has the power to make a difference, because as he reminded us, “everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”

The webpage includes a link to a podcast episode by King’s youngest daughter, Bernice A. King, alongside a free Apple Books edition of A Time to Break Silence: The Essential Works Of Martin Luther King, Jr. For Students.

MLK Day is a federal holiday in the US which takes place on the third Monday of January. This year’s anniversary seems a particularly poignant time.
