iPhone driver’s licenses: Here are all the states working on support

At WWDC 2021, Apple announced support for adding driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet. Since then, over a dozen states in the United States have rolled out support for the platform.

As that number continues to grow, here’s where driver’s licenses and state IDs could come next …

Apple says digital IDs are coming to these states next

Here are the seven states officially on board to support Apple Wallet digital IDs:

Other than Kentucky, there is no timeline on when these states will actually roll out support for the feature.

Other states exploring support

Beyond those, a number of states across the US are also broadly exploring digital IDs and driver’s licenses. This data is aggregated by the Secure Technology Alliance.

The following states and regions have enacted legislation and/or study activity on digital driver’s licenses:

  • Oklahoma
  • Missouri
  • Indiana
  • Tennessee
  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • South Carolina
  • New Jersey
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Vermont
  • Connecticut

The progress of these efforts varies significantly from state to state. In some states, it’s as simple as introducing legislation to support digital IDs. In other states, there’s been some level of activity related to this adoption. However, delays are inevitable whenever Apple collaborates with individual governments on a state-by-state basis.

The following states offer some form of proprietary digital ID platforms, but are are actively working on interoperability:

  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • Delaware
  • Kentucky

Other states not mentioned here do not currently have any digital ID and driver’s license initiatives in the works.

Wrap up

Additionally, Apple launched a new solution in iOS 26.1 that lets anyone with a passport create a digital ID, regardless of whether or not their state supports the feature.
