Apple TV earns Best Picture nomination for ‘F1: The Movie’ in 2026 Oscars

Apple TV is back in the above-the-line Oscars awards conversation with an unexpected Best Picture nomination for F1: The Movie, the Academy announced this morning.

The blockbuster F1 also got nominated for Best Sound, Film Editing, and Visual Effects. Documentary Come See Me in the Good Light was nominated for best feature length documentary, and The Lost Bus also got recognized for Visual Effects.

Apple will be pleased with this year’s haul, having not really fielded a typical ‘awards’ genre movie this season. The same was true last year, as well, and the company got zero nominations then. So, this year’s handful will be seen as a rousing success.

Clearly, the breakout box office performance of F1 resonated with Academy voters. In the run-up to the nominations being announced, most awards analysts expected F1 to get nominations in technical categories, but was seen as an outside shot for Best Picture.

The Oscars 2026 ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 15, where we’ll see if Apple can pick up any wins from its nominations.

The front-runner favorite to win Best Picture this year is Warner Bros. drama One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Apple continues to be the only streamer to have actually won the prestigious Best Picture prize, thanks to CODA in 2022, less than three years into Apple TV’s existence as a streaming service.
