MagSafe Monday: Hands-on with the Defencase MagSafe wallet

Since Apple first introduced MagSafe, the accessory market has flooded with wallets that typically follow a very specific form factor. Most are sleeves designed to hold two or three cards at most. They rarely resemble the classic wallets many people have carried for decades. The Defencase MagSafe wallet attempts to bridge this gap by offering a design that leans closer to a traditional aesthetic.

Design and capacity

The Defencase wallet is is a 1/2 inch thick and weighs 0.13 lbs, which makes it substantially thicker than Apple’s own wallet or similar slim competitors. While the manufacturer describes the design as minimalist, the addition of four card slots and a dedicated cash slot will add volume. The soft leather material includes visible stitching and two pairs of magnetic snaps designed to keep the wallet closed when you want it closed. Again, it’s not the thinnest wallet, but it’s not trying to be.

In terms of layout, the wallet provides easier access to your driver’s license and credit cards than the friction-based slots seen on other models. However, placing cards in all four slots and the cash pocket will significantly enhance the phone’s profile. The “upgraded” magnet strength is a critical factor here, with the added weight of cards and cash, the connection to the iPhone or MagSafe case must be strong to prevent it from coming off when you’re pulling it out of your pocket.

Stand functionality

Beyond holding your credit cards and a driver’s license, the Defencase wallet doubles as a stand. Since it folds open, you can prop up your iPhone to watch a movie or take a video call without needing a separate accessory. The two pairs of magnetic snaps keep it securely closed when not in use, preventing it from flapping around on the back of your phone.

Wrap up

Overall, the Defencase MagSafe wallet is a unique choice if you find typical magnetic cardholders too limiting or just want a more traditional-looking wallet. It is definitely thicker than the first-party Apple wallet, but the trade-off gives you enough room for four cards, a small amount of cash, and a built-in stand. If you are looking to ditch a regular wallet altogether but need more storage than a typical MagSafe wallet offers, this is worth a look.
