ChatGPT is down for many users in major OpenAI outage

It’s not just you: ChatGPT is down for many users right now. Here’s the latest on OpenAI’s outage.

Outage impacting all ChatGPT features for users

ChatGPT users began experiencing issues using the service around 3:00 p.m. Eastern, per Down Detector.

Reported cases about the outage spiked sharply shortly afterwards, with over 10,000 reported cases as of 3:15 p.m and climbing.

OpenAI’s official status page confirms the outage is impacting every facet of ChatGPT, including conversations, search, image generation, Codex, Atlas, and more.

Yesterday OpenAI launched the Codex app for Mac, which has proven very popular per CEO Sam Altman. He said it achieved over 200,000 day one downloads.

Then today, Apple introduced an update to Xcode that adds agentic coding support for both Codex and Claude.

While it’s unlikely these releases caused the current ChatGPT outage, it’s possible that higher than anticipated adoption of Codex is contributing to the issue.

We’ll keep you updated as more details emerge on the outage.
